Tottenham Hotspur will be hosting Sunderland in an important English Premier League matchup this Saturday, January 16 at White Hart Lane in London. Spurs dropped a pair of valuable points on Wednesday when they were beaten 1-0 at home by league co-leaders Leicester City. Meanwhile, Sunderland is still sitting in the relegation zone even after handing fellow struggling club Swansea City a 4-2 defeat in Wales the same day. Spurs’ loss to Leicester was a big one since a win would have put them within four points of first place.

Sunderland occupies 18th place in the 20-team league with 18 points from five victories, three draws and 13 defeats. They’ve scored 26 times and have allowed a league-worst 41 against. Their win over Swansea means they’re now just one point behind the Swans and safety from the relegation zone. Thirty-three-year-old English striker Jermain Defoe, who used to play for Spurs, led the way in Swansea with a hat trick and now has five goals in his past two appearances. Before that, he had five goals in his previous 22 matches.
The Black Cats’ road record is one of the worst in the league even with the win over Swansea. They’ve managed just two wins away from home along with a draw and eight defeats with 14 goals for and 30 against. Sunderland also needs to improve their disciplinary record since they’ve given up a league-high five penalty kicks so far this season. They enter the game in London with a pair of wins and four losses in their last six league fixtures.
Tottenham recently welcomed Belgian international midfielder Mousa Dembele back into the squad following a groin injury and Sunderland won’t be able to use the services of DeAndre Yedlin since he’s on loan with them from Tottenham, his parent club.
