The Oklahoma Sooners put a real pasting on the Villanova Wildcats when they met earlier in the campaign, and even though they probably couldn’t expect a similar result in Saturday’s Final Four showdown, they may hold some decided edges in the matchups as this game gets underway at 6 PM ET at NRG Stadium in Houston. Oklahoma, which has a record of 29-7 straight-up, but has only covered two of its last nine games and is 14-20 ATS overall, was very impressive in beating Oregon for the right to get to this point. And they have, by far, the most dangerous weapon in the game in Buddy Hield, the national player of the year, who averaged 25.4 points per game and has really step things up in the Big Dance, with a 29.3-point average on a 57% accuracy rate. Healed, who grew up in the Bahamas, does not always have to be a dominant scorer for Oklahoma to win, and that is part of the Sooners’ appeal. He only had 17 points in the regional semi-finals against Texas A&M, but Oklahoma still one handily as Hield’s backcourt mate, Jordan Woodard, picked up the slack with 22 points. There is a third member of this veteran backcourt, Isaiah Cousins, who is averaging 13.1 points per game.

The Sooners are coached by Lon Kruger, who has uniquely taken five different teams into the NCAA Tournament (Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, UNLV and now Oklahoma) and made the Final Four with Florida back in 1994. He’s got three senior starters, and a group of four players – Hield, Cousins, Woodard and forward Ryan Spangler – have started an amazing 104 consecutive games together. In other words, these kids know each other’s moves on the floor. And there is an anchor in the middle in Khaddem Lattin, whose grandfather was a member of the former national championship team with Texas Western, who has averaged 2.2 blocks per game.

BetAnySports patrons recall the December 7 meeting outing in Hawaii, in which Oklahoma, which shot 42.5% for the season beyond the arc, hit 14 of its 26 long-range attempts, and Villanova came up cold from out there, getting only four of their 32 tries. Actually, the Wildcats were not a team known for burning their opponents from the outside, at least until this particular tournament began. What is interesting about the venue (NRG Stadium) is that the depth perception has proven to be kind of troublesome for shooters. In twelve tournament games held there, all of the teams have combined for a shade under 30% from beyond the arc. Three-pointers accounted for 39% of Oklahoma’s points, so it is indeed possible that they will be the team affected more greatly.

Along the lines of college basketball betting trends, Oklahoma had dropped seven straight games to the number until they covered these last two, and they have been also trending “under,” going that way in 12 of their last 14 games. Villanova has been very comfortable the role of the favorite, compiling a 62-34 ATS mark over the last three seasons in that role.
