Wolfsburg racked up 12 points to win Group B on four victories and a pair of losses. They scored nine times and conceded six. Other teams in the group were PSV Eindhoven of Holland, English Premier League giants Manchester United and CSKA Moscow of Russia. Wolfsburg is struggling in the Bundesliga with just 38 points and sits eighth place in the 18-club league. They have 10 wins, eight draws and 10 defeats with 39 goals scored and 37 allowed. This is the first time Wolfsburg has reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League and it was also the first time they made it as far as the last 16. They last played on Friday and were beaten 3-0 away by Bayer Leverkusen.
Real Madrid currently sits in third place in the Spanish standings with 69 points from 21 wins, six draws and four losses. They’ve scored a league-high 89 goals and have allowed 29 against. Real is one point behind second-place Atletico Madrid and seven behind league-leading and reigning champions Barcelona. Real Madrid won Group A in the group stage with 16 points from five wins and a draw with 19 goals for and three against. Other clubs in the group were Paris Saint Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo.
This is the sixth straight season Real Madrid has made it to the quarterfinals and 33rd time overall as they aim to be crowned champions of Europe for the 11th time. They were one of just two clubs to go undefeated in this year’s group stage and won two and drew one on the road. Real’s last game was a huge 2-1 road win over Barcelona in the El Clasico on Saturday, which was their sixth straight victory in all competitions.
Both teams could be shorthanded as Naldo, Bas Dost, Arnold, Caligiuri, Jung, Draxler, and Kruse are all questionable for Wolfsburg while Abner and Varane are doubtful for Real Madrid. These two teams have never met before in European competition. In fact, Wolfsburg has only met Spanish opposition four times before with just one win and four losses. It’s the third time the German team has reached the final eight of a European tournament and they’re still looking to advance for the first time. They’ve been hot at home this year with four wins in four matches and six victories in their past seven European tilts.
Madrid has won five tournament outings in a row and nine out of 10. They’re 26-6 in quarterfinal showdowns, are unbeaten in Europe this year and have three victories and a draw on the road. They have just one loss in their past 11 European road games with eight victories and two draws. Madrid has won eight 12 and lost eight two-legged ties against German clubs. They’ve won three of their past four visits to Germany, but before those games, they had just one win in their previous 25 contests in Germany with 18 losses. They have four wins, six draws and 18 losses in Germany and an overall record of 28 wins, 10 draws and 22 defeats to Bundesliga sides.
