2018 New York Giants Odds and NFC East Betting Preview

The situation around the New York Giants got a little toxic last season. Coming off a year in which they went 11-5 and made the playoffs, the Giants were supposed to make another leap in 2017, but when the losing started, it didn’t stop, and there were injury issues. Things degenerated to the point where they actually benched their long-time quarterback, and the coach got fired. But now, as VietBet customers are aware, there is new cause for optimism around the Giants’ camp, so they are very confident they can get back to their 2016 level.

One of the moves most significant for the Giants is the one that they actually did NOT make, which is to say they did not draft a quarterback with the second overall selection. This was a hot topic of conversation throughout the second half of the 2017 season, as people wondered how long Eli Manning could stick around. At one point there was a strange situation where he was actually benched, and no matter what you hear, management and the coaching staff were both on board with that. But instead of taking a look at second-round draft pick Davis Webb, they decided to let Geno Smith start in Manning’s place. That did not last long.

2018 New York Giants Odds and Betting Preview

After the season was over, Dave Gettleman was hired as the general manager, and inasmuch as Ben McAdoo had already been fired prior to the end of the season, they brought in a new head coach, Pat Shurmur, who was the offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings last season. Shurmur, who was part of the revolving door of head coaches in Cleveland, apparently had some very fruitful meetings with Manning, and Gettleman, who was formerly the football boss in Carolina, decided that there wasn’t really a quarterback option near the top of the draft that made him too excited. So instead, he pulled the trigger on Saquon Barkley, who was supposed to be one of the best running back prospects in years.

Barkley, out of Penn State, could come in and be a intermediate star. He is obviously an explosive runner from scrimmage, and he does give this offense some flexibility, in the respect that he’s got enough speed to split out wide, and if the Giants want to use him as a return man, they can do that too. To take some of the burden off of him, the Giants signed Jonathan Stewart, the veteran running back who used to be with the Panthers, and they also made a key addition to the offensive line, signing Nate Solder, the former New England Patriots tackle.

Brandon Marshall is gone, but the Giants like to think they can get a healthy season out of Odell Beckham, who was lost to them for the most part last season. The second round of the draft brought them Wil Hernandez, a guard out of UTEP who they really like, and he is a likely starter. So the left side of the line will have been rebuilt.

Yes, Jason Pierre-Paul is no longer part of the picture, and neither is Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Giants did spend two third-round draft picks on defensive linemen, and they did reach out and sign some free agents, including linebacker Alec Ogletree from the Los Angeles Rams.

You have to remember that even though these guys finished #31 in defense last season, they are only one year removed from having one of the best stop units in the NFL. McAdoo “lost the locker room,” as the saying goes, so don’t discount that there is a better atmosphere now, despite the fact that unfortunately, Gettleman was diagnosed with cancer. They’ve shown Manning a big vote of confidence, and don’t be surprised if there is a very interesting turnaround in the Meadowlands this season.
