Smith may or may not thrive with some new scenery, and the Redskins believe that Paul Richardson, a former Seattle Seahawks with a signed as a free agent, could wind up being their top receiver. Josh Doctson, who started to develop last season, and Jamison Crowder are two of the other main targets Smith will be throwing to out wide.
They lost Terelle Pryor, who signed with the New York Jets, but the reality is that Pryor, a former quarterback for the Oakland Raiders who made a successful conversion to the wide receiver spot with Cleveland, never really fit into the offensive scheme in the nation’s capital.
One of the more intriguing editions for coach Jay Gruden is running back Derrius Guice, who came in the second round from LSU. Guice was considered a first-round talent, but he made some accusations during the interview process that turned off a lot of scouts, and word gets around about this kind of player in the NFL. So all of a sudden Guice became a “character” issue. The truth of the matter is that the Redskins have not really had the kind of featured back who stands out, and this could be the guy. If Guice performs, he could be a big steal with the 59th overall selection.
Of course, the health of Trent Williams is also very important. When healthy, he is one of the best left tackles in the National Football League. And Smith is prone to take sacks, rather than throw interceptions, so he will need all the protection he can get.
The Redskins were down near the bottom in scoring defense last season, giving up 24.2 points per game, and they wanted to address their run defense in the draft, which they did by selecting Da’Ron Payne, defensive tackle out of Alabama, with the 13th overall pick. And after trading Kendall Fuller in the deal with Kansas City that landed Smith, they opened up a hole that perhaps Orlando Scandrick, the former Dallas Cowboy, can help to fill.
Don’t underestimate Smith, but even with an efficient Cousins at the controls, Washington has not been a major threat. This is a pretty competitive division, and we are not sure they measure up.
