Packers vs Vikings Odds and Betting Preview
The Packers looked asleep for the first 2 1/2 quarters of Sunday’s game, falling behind 20-0 to the Bears. What’s more, Rodgers had gone into the locker room with a knee injury during the first half, and his backup, DeShone Kizer, who was last seen leading the Cleveland Browns to an 0-16 record, had thrown an ill-advised pass into the hands of Khalil Mack, who returned it 27 yards for a touchdown in the final minute before halftime.
No one really expected Rodgers to return, but he indeed did, and threw three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, handing the befuddled Bears a 24-23 defeat.
It was a big weekend for the Vikings as well, as free-agent Kirk Cousins, who signed an $84 million contract, made his debut with the team. His statistics were not mind-boggling, but the Minnesota defense made up for it, intercepting Jimmy Garoppolo three times on the way to a 24-16 victory. The Vikings, the defending NFC North champions, swept both games against the Packers last season, and outscoring them by a 39-10 margin.
Cousins went 20 of 36 for 244 yards, and he may have found his favorite receiver, as he connected with Adam Thielen for 102 yards through the air. Anyone who was looking for an explosive return from Dalvin Cook was a little disappointed, as he had only 40 yards on 16 carries. Latavius Murray is their second guy in the backfield (42 yards). No, this was not an explosive attack, and you must remember that Minnesota had to replace two injured offensive lineman – center Pat Elflein and guard Nick Easton.
But they did deal Jimmy G his first loss as an NFL starting quarterback, limiting him to 15 completions in 33 attempts. The Vikings took advantage of the fact that San Francisco does not have a very potent running game, and you might say the same thing for the Packers, who really haven’t found the kind of feature back who can make a difference. And if you have followed Minnesota in the off-season, you know that they had added defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson and cornerback Mike Hughes, a first-round draft pick (who had a pick-six vs. San Francisco), to a defense that held opposing passers to just 5.5 yards an attempt and ranked #1 overall in the NFL. In other words, Cousins is not have to do a whole lot to help this team win games.
You have to have some questions about the Green Bay defense, which did allow Chicago to move rather seamlessly in the first half last week, and before the Bears suffered their psychological meltdown. Minnesota has more weapons than the they do, and we see them as the more complete team at the moment, capable of winning this game straight-up, while putting pressure on Rodgers, will still have the after-effects of that knee injury.
