Southampton vs Liverpool – Head to Head:

  • These two clubs last met twice in the Premier League last season with Southampton winning 3-2 at home after drawing 1-1 at Anfield. Southampton was also drilled 6-1 at home in the English League Cup. The Saints have just one win in the last six meetings along with four losses and a draw. Overall, these two sides have met 102 times in the past with Liverpool winning 51, losing 28 and drawing the other 23.

Southampton – A Closer Look:

The Saints enter the weekend in 10th place in the 20-team league with 13 points from three wins, four draws and four losses. They’ve scored just 12 goals, but have also allowed only 12 against. They’re coming into this contest after two straight losses to Hull City and Chelsea. Southampton is 11 points behind fourth-place Arsenal and the last European Champions League spot and is 13 behind league-leading Liverpool.

It’s unclear at this point exactly who will be in the Southampton lineup on Saturday since midfielders Dusan Tadic and Matthew Targett are both questionable due to injury problems along with forward Shane Long and defender Cedric. The Saints need to pick up the pace as they’re just three points ahead of 18th-place Hull City and the league’s relegation zone.

Liverpool – A Closer Look:

The Reds are coming off of big 6-1 demolition of Watford at Anfield and enter the 11th round of action still in first place in the Premier League. They have 26 points from eight wins, two draws and a loss with a league-high 30 goals for and 14 against. They hope to finish at least in the top four to earn a spot in the next season’s European Champions League, but are also looking like serious title challengers. They head into the weekend with a one-point lead over second-place Chelsea and two up on Manchester City and Arsenal. They also have a five-point cushion over fifth-place Tottenham.

Liverpool enters the game on a 12-match unbeaten streak in all competitions including wins over Arsenal and Chelsea and a draws with Tottenham and Manchester United in league action and a victory over Tottenham in the League Cup. The Reds have managed just one clean sheet this season and that was the 0-0 draw against Man United. They’ve also won four of their six road games. Manager Jurgen Klopp has a few injury concerns as midfielder Sheyi Ojo is also likely to miss the game. In addition, defender Mamadou Sakho is back in training, but expected to miss the match game and the same thing goes for defender Joe Gomez. In addition, forward Danny Ings is expected to miss the rest of the season due to knee surgery.

Southampton vs Liverpool – Takeaway:

Even though the visitors are on a roll, Southampton has to start picking up some points on a consistent basis before they drop any lower in the standings. The Reds need all three points here to stay in sole position of first place.
