You couldn’t have possibly played much worse than the New York Jets did last weekend, as they turned the ball over eight times. They didn’t look much like a playoff team, as they aspire to be. And so they have to get their act together in time to play host to the Seattle Seahawks, which they will do on Sunday, starting at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Seahawks vs Jets – CJ’s Take:
There was so much talk about Ryan Fitzpatrick in the off-season, and in the days leading up to training camp, as he had been negotiating for a new deal with the Jets, who definitely wanted him back after what might have been his best season as a pro in 2015, when he led the team to the brink of a playoff spot. Fitzpatrick looked so incredible in the second game of the season, as he carved up the Buffalo Bills for 374 yards, but then things just simply collapsed for him last week against the Kansas City Chiefs, as he threw six interceptions and averaged only 4.3 yards per attempt in the 24-3 loss. What was interesting about the game is that the Jets outgained the Chiefs, but they had virtually nothing to show for it.
The Seahawks had all kinds of offensive troubles in the first two weeks of the year, scoring a total of 15 points, but they woke up a little last week against San Francisco, leading the 49ers 37-3 at one point before finally allowing a couple of garbage touchdowns for the final 37-18 verdict. But they did not come out of the game unscathed; Russell Wilson is a little banged up, as he has ankle and knee problems, and rookie Trevone Boykin had to finish the game at quarterback.
Wilson already had ankle injuries, and then he sprained his MCL, but Pete Carroll, the head coach, says that he fully expects that he will be in action on Sunday. Boykin did complete seven of his nine passes with a touchdown, and he also threw an interception.
The running back position is still a little thin. Thomas Rawls has been injured, but Christine Michael continues to perform, gaining 106 yards against San Francisco. The Seahawks signed CJ Spiller, the former speedster out of Clemson, to add a little depth back there.
BetAnySports patrons saw the Seattle defense show up for the most part last week, holding the Niners to 254 yards and 12 first downs. But they did not have a quarterback sack, and that’s the kind of thing that sometimes happens when you try to rush with only four people. Will they force Fitzpatrick into some more mistakes? Well, no one knows the answer to that question, but they have the Legion of Boom in the secodnary, and Kansas City shut down both Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall last week. Marshall should be a little healthier than he was last time out, as he has been dealing with knee and foot problems. Meanwhile, the New York media is all over Fitzpatrick, and, in front-running fashion, they are questioning why the Jets spent so much money on a journeyman quarterback.
One chink in the armor for the Seahawks is that they have an inexperienced offensive line, and we know that New York’s strength is on their defensive front. So Michael could expect that he’ll have a more difficult time than usual putting the Seattle offense in favorable down-and-distance situations, and Wilson will not have the kind of mobility he is used to having.
Next up for both teams:
- The Jets are in Pittsburgh Sunday, October 9th
- The Seahawks are on their bye in week 5
