Suffice it to say that there has been quite a bit of disappointment around South Bend lately, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have managed to transform a season with there was lots of hope into a virtual nightmare. And it had to be a little bit of a surprise that there has been a shakeup within the ranks already. On Saturday, Notre Dame will try to get its record closer to the .500 mark as it takes on the Syracuse Orange in a game scheduled to begin at Noon ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Notre Dame vs Syracuse – CJ’s Take:
Notre Dame lost its opener to Texas and then later to Michigan State, but to be defeated by Duke at home had to be unanticipated, to say the least. The final score of that game last Saturday was 38-35, and it plummeted the Irish to 103rd in the nation in total defense, and that obviously was unacceptable. So head coach Brian Kelly pulled the trigger and fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, replacing him with another assistant coach, Greg Hudson, who is no novice to this kind of position, having held it three different schools previously.
Syracuse is in its first year under head coach Dino Babers, who had formerly been at Bowling Green. The objective this season for the offense has been to turn up the tempo, and they have done just that. However, early results are an indication that the Orange are still not quite there as far as competing with the best teams in the Atlanta Coast Conference.
Kelly was so angry after the game that he’s announced that all jobs are up for grabs. That’s probably not literally the case, but obviously he is very concerned about complacency among some of his starters. Whether there is a change at quarterback or not, that remains to be seen. DeShaun Kizer has been the regular, but Malik Zaire, whose injury last season opened up the door for Kizer, is obviously very capable of taking over the position if need be. We would imagine that there is going to be a ramped-up intensity on defense, however, with the Irish this week. Whether it persists is anyone’s guess.
So the question VietBet patrons probably have to ask themselves is, what can the Orange do offensively? We mentioned that Babers wants to get off plays more quickly than they have in the past at Syracuse, so he needed a trigger man who could get the job done. He settle on Eric Dengey, who has done a credible job with 1367 passing yards. And in the 31-24 victory over Connecticut last time out, Amba Etta-Tawo had 270 yards in receptions. He’s aredshirt senior who was not even expected to be one of the starters this year. And speaking of starters, Syracuse came back with a lot of experience, with eight returning offensive and defensive starters, but the offensive line is the least experienced unit they have, and that is important.
This is not necessarily a step up in class for them, but Syracuse has not demonstrated that they can stick with top-level teams. They have already lost 62-28 to Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals, and also suffered a 45-20 defeat at the hands of Dalvin Cook and the Florida State Seminoles.
There is a certain amount of regional support for Syracuse, so they will have their fair share of fans. But obviously Notre Dame has a certain kind of edge at almost every neutral site they play at, particularly year in the Meadowlands.
