Arizona vs UCLA – CJ’s Take:
UCLA is 2-2, but has yet to cover against the college football point spread. Last week they suffered their ninth straight loss to Stanford, and it was particularly disappointing, as they thought they had a last-minute drive underway to win the game, but suffered an interception that was returned for a touchdown, thus giving Stanford backers the cover.
Arizona has been missing Anu Solomon, the quarterback who had been running Rich Rodriguez’s spread offense, but from at least one perspective, it might be more advantageous to have Brandon Dawkins in the lineup, as he is a better runner with the football.
And speaking of the spread offense, that is something UCLA has been gravitating back to at times, even though Noel Mazzone’s departure to Texas A&M was supposed to signal the installation of the pro-style attack. Either way, Josh Rosen is at the controls, and as a sophomore, he’s trying to pick up where he left off as a freshman when he showed a lot of poise and produced some more-then-respectable numbers.
Both Solomon and Nick Wilson sat out last week’s game, yet Arizona took Washington, a top-10 team, right down to the wire. So there is no mistaking that there is some talent on hand. The Wildcats have lost a couple of heartbreakers this season, including the opener, when BYU came down for a last-minute drive and a winning field goal to beat them 18-16.
Rosen might be one of the better NFL prospects in college football right now at the quarterback position, but there has been some question about his maturity level. Sometimes when things aren’t going well, he isn’t all that coachable. And it is not as if UCLA is fortified with a lot of talent in the backfield either. They are just not running the ball with authority, gaining only 127 yards on the ground over their last two games.
