Clemson’s quarterback is about as good as it gets in college football if you place any value on those “dual-threat” types. DeShaun Watson went absolutely wild last season, throwing for 4104 yards and running for 1105 more, accounting for 47 touchdowns between the two. Then he proceeded to lead his team to the championship game, where they racked up 550 yards against a fearsome Alabama defense. Clemson brings back enough receiving talent, and also adds one, as Mike Williams, a legitimate NFL prospect who was injured in the season opener last year and didn’t see the field again, is healthy and ready. Along with running back Wayne Gallman (1527 yards), these guys give Dabo Swinney’s team enough artillery that they could be even more potent than last year.
Clemson only has four starters returning on defense, but when you consider the fact that they had to replace nine people who departed before the beginning of last season, this may not be a gargantuan task. Brent Venables, the former defensive coordinator at Oklahoma, is a prime head-coaching prospect, and he can get the most of the people who are around; that includes senior linebacker Ben Boulware, who is the leading returning tackler.
Auburn went just 7-6 last season, and despite the hiring of a new coordinator in Will Muschamp – who is now the head coach at South Carolina – they finished next to last in the Southeastern Conference when it came to yards allowed. So there is definitely some work to do on that end. In each of the last five seasons, Auburn has yielded at least 4.5 yards per rushing attempt. Head coach Gus Malzahn, who has won a national title at the school and also finished as a runner-up, has lost at least five games in four of the last five seasons. And he has a quarterback dilemma, as he is starting a sophomore who probably isn’t the best fit in his read-option system. Sean White will get the call, and he did not distinguish himself very much on the ground or through the air, as he threw just one touchdown pass with four interceptions.
Javon Robinson, the leading returning rusher who averaged 5.5 yards a pop last season, was dismissed from the team for disciplinary reasons, and he is already enrolled at Valdosta State. So in a sense, Auburn starts over at the running back spot as well. This is going to be a tall task for this team in terms of trading points with a Clemson squad that appears to be loaded once again, and is very stable.
