Florida State, which won the national championship in the 2013 season and then went to the four-team college football playoff the next year, was a disappointing 10-3 in 2015, as they brought in Everett Golson, a transfer from Notre Dame, to be the quarterback. Sean Maguire wound up throwing as many passes (almost) as Golson did, and he was slated to be the starter at quarterback this season until he suffered an injury and had to have surgery on his foot. Now he is a backup, and redshirt freshman DeAndre François will take over. François is somebody who can do about as much damage with his legs as his arm, and FSU fans are anxious to see what he can do under actual game conditions.

Ole Miss was the only team to defeat Alabama last season, but they had a tumultuous off-season, which includes an ongoing NCAA investigation. They also finished 10-3 in 2015, and they return one of the top quarterbacks in the country in Chad Kelly.

Kelly threw for 4042 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, and he was brilliant in engineering the victory over Alabama, passing for 341 yards. This team returns five starters on both sides of the football, but they have lost some very important players. Obviously, the defense will be without Robert Nkemdiche, who was a first-round draft choice of the Arizona Cardinals, while the offense loses tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was taken by the Miami Dolphins, and Laquon Treadwell, a first-round pick at wide receiver by the Minnesota Vikings. It was an incident involving Tunsil and his subsequent claims against the coaching staff and their recruiting tactics that led to the investigation, and no one really knows where it’s going to wind up.

Hugh Freeze has done a great job recruiting at Ole Miss, and it’s not really surprising that some of his efforts may have invited an investigation. BetAnySports patrons need to know certain things for purposes of this encounter, including the fact that since the 2011 season, Freeze has covered the spread 68% of the time. Of course, there is the question about what he will do at skill positions, and one of the people we will see more of is Damore’ea Stringfellow, a Washington transfer who caught 36 passes for 503 yards last season. Greg Little, perhaps the top available high school recruit at left tackle, will step into Tunsil’s shoes.

François’ job will be easier than most incoming freshmen quarterbacks, as he will have the talents of Dalvin Cook to avail himself of. Cook is, quite simply, one of the top players in college football, and a surefire candidate for the Heisman. Last year, as a sophomore, he ran for 1691 yards with 19 rushing touchdowns. He also averaged nearly 7.4 yards per carry. If Florida State remains near the top of the polls, Cook will unquestionably have a boatload of Heisman support. They have to get by this game, of course, but if they can, everything might lead up to an October 29 showdown against Clemson, which will definitely be something to see in Tallahassee.
