Browns vs Redskins – CJ’s Take:

Washington’s Kirk Cousins had 296 yards passing last week, and the Redskins avoided going 0-3 by beating the New York Giants. They did well in that one, overcoming a 12-point deficit, but that was as an underdog. In the favorite’s role, they have dropped their last three against the football point spread.

The Browns were competitive all the way against Miami Dolphins but lost in the overtime session. They had to go with a raw rookie at quarterback, as Cody Kessler, a third-round draft choice out of USC, made his first NFL start in place of the injured Josh McCown. Already, the Browns have used three different starting quarterbacks, and Kessler actually gave way on many snaps to Terrelle Pryor, the former quarterback at Ohio State and old the Oakland Raiders, who has been converted to a wide receiver.

The Browns suffered a tough break, or two, or three, last week. They went into the game without center Cameron Erving, pass rusher Carl Nassib and defensive back Joe Haden, and they also had to go without rookie ride receiver Corey Coleman, who had broken his hand in practice. In Coleman’s place, Pryor had his best receiving game as a pro, catching eight of Kessler’s passes for 144 yards. This week they hope to be healthier, although who knows whether Pryor will continue to play a multi-varied role, sometimes taking snaps at quarterback.

It was a real killer that kicker Cody Parkey missed three field goals in the game, including the one near the end, when the Browns could have converted a Miami turnover into the winning points. Generally, a kicker is cut after doing those kinds of things, but Parkey, for the moment, will stick with the team. And no doubt VietBet patrons read a report about how the Browns would have signed Robbie Gould, the former Chicago Bears kicker, but chose to save money instead. The team has emphatically denied those reports.

The Redskins have some injuries of their own to worry about. DeAngelo Hall, the veteran safety, has torn his ACL and he is out for the year. Bashaud Breland, the cornerback who was burned pretty good in the first two games, suffered a high ankle sprain and will most likely miss this game. DeShaun Phillips, who came in for Breland, suffered a hamstring injury and he is iffy. So obviously Washington is thin in the secondary right now.

Does Kessler have the ability to exploit all this? Well, he went 21 four 33 for 244 yards in Sunday’s game and let’s remember that he played a pro-style system at USC and was known for his accuracy. Let’s see what develops with him.

Next up for both teams:

  • Cleveland hosts New England Sunday, October 9th, 1:00 pm ET
  • Washington visits Baltimore Sunday, October 9th, 1:00 pm ET
