Week 2 NFL Betting Preview - Patriots vs Bills

Rex Ryan Leads Bills Against Hated Patriots

By Charles Jay

Well, the New England Patriots were little short on personnel in their season opener, but like they do so many times, they turned to quarterback Tom Brady to bail them out, and he threw four touchdown passes in leading his team to a victory before nationwide audience a week ago Thursday. Now the Patriots are well rested and ready to battle an old nemesis in Rex Ryan, as he waits for them with his Buffalo Bills, who were extremely impressive in their own season opener. The action gets underway at 1 PM ET at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, and even after the opening kickoff, BetAnySports customers have the ability to place wagers in real time on the side, total and various props through the magic of Live Betting Extra.

New England had to start three rookies on the offensive line, and they were also without running back LeGarrette Blount, who had to sit out the first game of the season on a suspension that originated with his marijuana arrest about a year ago (he’s back now). But Brady had the answers, and he collaborated with tight end Rob Gronkowski for most of them. Gronkowski caught five passes, but three of them were for touchdowns, and the Pats emerged with a 28-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were going through transition on defense. We are not sure the same can be said for the Bills, who had one of the top defensive units in the league last season and could only get more “gnarly” with the arrival of Ryan, who hates everything about the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick. So don’t expect any letdown from Buffalo, even after they stifled Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts 27-14 last Sunday.

The fact of the matter is that the Bills took one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League and held him to 26 completions in 49 attempts and intercepted him twice. They got off to a big early lead and then never relinquished it. What may be surprising actually to some of the football bettors who watched this game was at Buffalo was able to win by almost two touchdowns without a major contribution from running back LaSean McCoy, who figured to be a major factor in Ryan’s “ground and pound” philosophy. McCoy had 41 yards on 17 carries, and Karlos Williams actually was the main guy out of the backfield, averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

But BetAnySports patrons can consider themselves to be educated by all of this, because at least they know that Williams can handle some of the burden. McCoy has been bothered by a hamstring injury, and reportedly it is still hampering him. But the fact that Pittsburgh’s DeAngelo Williams was able to carve through the New England defense for 127 yards last week is encouraging for the Buffalo offense.

So is the fact that Tyrod Taylor, who made his first NFL start last week, was very efficient, completing 14 out of 19 passes and avoiding any sacks. The Patriots will still be going with two rookies on the offensive line, and that is somewhat dangerous when you look at the people like Mario Williams, Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus who will be putting the pressure on from the Bills’ defensive front.
