Week 1 NCAA Football Betting - Ohio State vs Virginia Tech

Even though nobody realized the Ohio State Buckeyes were going to proceed to win the national championship, and were using a second-string quarterback making only his second start in the college ranks, the 35-21 upset the Virginia Tech Hokies sprung on them in last season’s second week was considered somewhat monumental. And so BetAnySports customers might naturally assume that Ohio State is on the warpath and might overpower Virginia Tech in this revenge situation. Well, the first part of that might be correct, but will the Hokies go so quietly? Remember that they are playing this game at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, VA, and that they are arguably better healthier and stronger team than they were at this stage last season. Game time is 8 PM ET, televised by ESPN, and customers can wager on the action as it is happening through the facilities of Live Betting Extra.

College Football Betting Preview – Ohio State vs Virginia Tech

In the NCAA football odds posted on this game by the folks at BetAnySports, Ohio State is laying a lot of points:

  • Ohio State Buckeyes -14
  • Virginia Tech Hokies +14
  • Over 52.5 points -110
  • Under 52.5 points -110

After winning that game in Columbus, the Hokies got into the national rankings, but not long afterward, things kind of went downhill for Virginia Tech. Their low-water marks were probably a 30-6 home defeat at the hands of Miami, and a 6-3 double-overtime loss at Wake Forest. They suffered a rash of injuries at the running back position, and so they did not have a lot of support for Brewer, who wound up with 18 touchdown passes, but 15 interceptions. This year they bring back eight starters on both the offensive and defensive units, and should have a lot more depth in the backfield going forward.

It was not an offensive bonanza for the Hokies in last year’s meeting. They gained only 324 total yards, averaging only three yards per carry. But they were also able to rattle JT Barrett, who was making his second start in place of the injured Braxton Miller. Mind you, this was before Barrett really got his legs under him and became an eventual Heisman Trophy contender. But he completed only nine of his 29 passes, and there is no question that he was confused. Ohio State also only gained 2.7 yards per rushing attempt. Certainly they like to think there is a different story in the rematch, and that they are playing with a lot more confidence, with no real possibility of looking past this opponent. But let’s consider the case for Virginia Tech as well.

BetAnySports customers who have been following this team in camp know that sophomore Marshawn Williams, who suffered a knee injury last year, will be unavailable, but JC Coleman is back in the fold, as is Trey Edmunds, and they have converted a quarterback, Trayvon McMillan, into a running back. Brewer, a highly-touted recruit who is a transfer from Texas Tech, should be a little steadier under center as a senior. And everybody knows that coach Frank Beamer, who is entering his 29th season, always has this club playing outstanding special teams. Yes, we know that some football bettors might underestimate them after a 7-6 season, but do not expect Virginia Tech to lie down and roll over.
