After winning that game in Columbus, the Hokies got into the national rankings, but not long afterward, things kind of went downhill for Virginia Tech. Their low-water marks were probably a 30-6 home defeat at the hands of Miami, and a 6-3 double-overtime loss at Wake Forest. They suffered a rash of injuries at the running back position, and so they did not have a lot of support for Brewer, who wound up with 18 touchdown passes, but 15 interceptions. This year they bring back eight starters on both the offensive and defensive units, and should have a lot more depth in the backfield going forward.
It was not an offensive bonanza for the Hokies in last year’s meeting. They gained only 324 total yards, averaging only three yards per carry. But they were also able to rattle JT Barrett, who was making his second start in place of the injured Braxton Miller. Mind you, this was before Barrett really got his legs under him and became an eventual Heisman Trophy contender. But he completed only nine of his 29 passes, and there is no question that he was confused. Ohio State also only gained 2.7 yards per rushing attempt. Certainly they like to think there is a different story in the rematch, and that they are playing with a lot more confidence, with no real possibility of looking past this opponent. But let’s consider the case for Virginia Tech as well.
