Watford vs Tottenham Hotspur – Head to Head:
These two teams met twice in league action last season with Tottenham winning 2-1 away and 1-0 at home. Overall, these two sides have met just 41 times in the past with Tottenham winning 26, losing seven and drawing the other eight. Watford is winless in the last nine games with two draws and seven losses including five defeats in a row. Watford’s last win was 3-2 on the road in October of 1994 in an English League Cup match. It’s their only win in the last 13 meetings.
Watford – A Closer Look:
Watford earned a point at home last week with a 1-1 come-from-behind draw with Crystal Palace. They enter the midway mark of the 2016/17 campaign with 22 points from six wins, four draws and eight losses. Watford has scored 22 goals and allowed 30 against. They’re 24 points behind league-leading Chelsea and eight ahead of 18th-place Sunderland and the relegation zone.
Watford manager Walter Mazzarri has a few injury concerns to deal with as defender James Collins is listed as day to day along with defenders Sam Byram and Reece Oxford. Forward Diafra Sakho isn’t expected back until March and it looks like midfielder Gokhan Tore will be lost to the team for the rest of the season. On the bright side, midfielder Pedro Mba Obiang should be back in the lineup after missing last week’s game with a suspension.
Tottenham Hotspur – A Closer Look:
Tottenham was the Premier League’s only undefeated until a few weeks ago, but was then beaten 2-1 by Chelsea and 1-0 by Man United at Old Trafford. They enter the weekend still in fifth place with 33 points from nine wins, six draws and two defeats. Spurs have scored 31 goals and allowed 12 against. Tottenham is just one point behind fourth-place Arsenal, three back of Man City, four behind second-place Liverpool and 10 behind league-leading Chelsea. Spurs have just five wins in their past 15 games in all competitions along with five draws and five defeats.
Tottenham has three wins, four draws and two defeats on the road this season, but has won just once on their past six trips. Spurs have won three of their past four league games though and five of their past six in all competitions, including three in a row. On the injury front, it looks line Erik Lamela is doubtful for the game and Mousa Dembele could return to manager Mauricio Pochettino’s lineup. However, defenders Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose are suspended for the contest.
Watford vs Tottenham Hotspur – Takeaway:
Tottenham needs all three points here to keep within striking distance and the top four teams with a berth in the 2017/18 European Champions League at stake. Watford would probably be happy with a draw against one of the league’s better teams.
