Vikings vs Patriots Odds – CJ’s Take
The Vikings were able to come up with a nice win last week against Aaron Rogers and the sliding Green Bay Packers, and Kirk Cousins did a lot of it himself, completing 29 of 38 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Adam Thielen had another 100-yard game (125 yards, to be exact) and Minnesota held Green Bay to just 254 net yards in a 24-17 victory. On the season, Minnesota is allowing just 3.7 yards per carry, which isn’t bad.
The Patriots came off the bye week to beat the New York Jets 27-13, with Rob Gronkowski catching three passes for 56 yards, which included a 34-yard connection with Tom Brady for a touchdown. The Pats lost two of their first three games, but then had a six-game winning streak, which was snapped in no uncertain terms by Tennessee three weeks ago (34-10). They are very much in command in the AFC East, leaving the Miami Dolphins by three games.
Minnesota’s pass rush has been greatly enhanced by the return of Everson Griffen to the lineup. And defensive end Danielle Hunter has been absolute terror for opposing quarterbacks, with 11.5 sacks. As a team, the Vikings have sacked the passer 36 times, and if they can prevent Tom Brady from stepping up in the pocket, they are going to cause a lot of havoc.
Brady is having a good year as usual, but he is not exactly in the stratosphere as far as his numbers are concerned. He is a 65% passer with 19 touchdowns, and he’s been intercepted seven times, meaning that he’s been picked off more frequently than Cousins has. One nice boost to the New England has been the return of Sony Michel to the lineup. The rookie out of Georgia had 133 yards on the ground last week against the Jets, although it’s not likely that the Pats will move that easily against the Minnesota defensive front, which has allowed just 93.6 rushing yards per game (on the basis of 3.7 yards per carry).
Let’s see how the New England secondary will handle Minnesota’s wide receivers. No, this is not a team with a huge downfield threat, like the Patriots have with Josh Gordon. But Thelen (1138 yards) and Stefon Diggs (790 yards) are able to catch just about anything thrown to them, and ultimately they have gotten on the same page as Cousins, who signed that massive free-agent contract to run the West Coast offense.
Minnesota’s defense is so tough against opponents on third down (27.6% allowed) that they should be able to come up with an extra stop or two to keep this game close, so taking the points may not be a bad idea.
