There are a lot of people out there who believe that when all is said and done, the Volunteers are going to be one of the teams to beat in the SEC. Of course, getting through the early part of the schedule is a challenge. Last week they were taken into overtime by Appalachian State and needed a recovered fumble in the end zone to win it. They were fortunate there. Will they need good fortune as well to beat Virginia Tech, a team that is now going through a transition after the departure of a long-time and well-respected coach?
The Hokies got a decent workout in their first game, a win over Liberty. It was the debut in Blacksburg for Justin Fuente, who used to be the defensive coordinator at TCU and then had a successful stint at Memphis, where he brought the Tigers to two straight bowl appearances and sent quarterback Paxton Lynch into the NFL as a first-round draft pick.
Virginia Tech moves forward without the retired Frank Beamer, who in his 29 years at the school established a lot of goodwill, not to mention a reputation for great defense and special teams. Well, the prowess of the special teams remains to be seen, but the residue of his tenure still remains, as Bud Foster, his trusty defensive coordinator for the last 21 yards, was kept on by Fuente. Foster may have expected to be elevated to the top job, but while he is around he is going to have an aggressive defensive unit, and the Hokies are very stingy when it comes to pass completions, having permitted less than 50% completions.
VietBet patrons know that Tennessee needs to get something more substantial out of Joshua Dobbs, their nimble quarterback who was just 16 for 29 against Appalachian State. Dobbs makes plays, but he doesn’t do a great job of stretching the field, and that is going to be a concern as the Vols go into the SEC schedule. But Tennessee didn’t land all that far from an undefeated season last year, with close losses to the likes of Oklahoma, Florida, Arkansas and eventual national champion Alabama.
The venue is obviously going to be very unusual. Many fans are going to be far from the action, as this is a race oval which seats 160,000, and while a full crowd is expected to be in attendance, remember that the town of Bristol straddles the border of Tennessee and Virginia, and so the Hokies should have some of their faithful there, loud and proud.
