Super Bowl 53 Odds – How Much Does Experience Mean?

football32 - Super Bowl 53 Odds - Patriots vs Rams Betting PreviewWith each Super Bowl the New England Patriots are involved with, the question of “big game experience” is brought up. And there’s good reason for that, since the combination of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick has been there SO many times. And in the instance before us, there is so much age and experience on one side, with youth and inexperience on the other. Or at least on the surface that is what it looks like. How much does it all mean? We’ll find out Sunday in Atlanta, as the Patriots take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

Super Bowl 53 Odds – CJ’s Take on Patriots vs Rams:

One thing that is important to note is that the Patriots have never put a lot of distance between themselves and their opponents in the Super Bowl, no matter how much of an experience edge they may have had. And last season, they encountered an opposing head coach (Doug Pederson) who was in only his second season, and wasn’t exactly being outsmarted by the old hand (Belichick).

And here, there is something of a similarity between Rams’ coach Sean McVay and Pederson, in that both of them have an intimate working knowledge of analytics and are not the slightest bit afraid to operate “out of the box.” And it is no secret that McVay, who is just 32 years old, is the model for some of the new hires in the NFL coaching ranks. Almost everybody wants another McVay.

McVay is not only someone who has been around these kinds of situations going back to when he was a kid since he is from a well-known football family, but he also carries a certain level of unpredictability with him, and that makes it difficult for Belichick to get a handle on him.

The other angle here is that the Rams are not at all found wanting for experience on the defensive side, because Wade Phillips is pretty much the dean of defensive coordinators. He’s got so many tricks in his bag that he might be unpredictable as well. And if we are talking about the term “experience,” Phillips has put together a game plan for the 2015 AFC Championship Game against the Patriots, when he was working in Denver for the Broncos. He shaped a package that put more pressure on Brady than he has probably ever faced, so he has obviously extensive homework.

If there is a real place where we can find an edge in experience manifesting itself, it could be at the quarterback position. And we are not just talking about eight Super Bowls Brady has appeared in. It’s how he has performed in those Super Bowls, specifically the last two, where he has thrown for 971 yards. It is not a stretch to say that he has encountered every conceivable situation in big games, while the same can’t necessarily be said of Jared Goff, who has shown some poise in these two playoff games but does not exactly had a head of steam, throwing just six touchdown passes in the last seven games. And two weeks ago, he looked somewhat shaky in the first half against New Orleans. Remember that the Patriots have outscored opponents 49-7 in the first half of their two playoff games leading up to this.
