Saints vs Vikings Odds – CJ’s Take
The principals have changed just a little bit since then, the respect that the Vikings went out and acquired Kirk Cousins through free agency. Cousins, who was thought to be a step up from Keenum in terms of executing the offense they wanted to employ, has had a statistically solid season, with 2162 yards and 14 touchdowns through seven games. And he has only been intercepted three times. What the Vikings have struggled to do is maintain a ground attack in that has especially been the case without Dalvin Cook available most of the time. But the Latavius Murray has been stepping forward in recent weeks to try to give them some semblance of balance. Even with that, however, Minnesota has thrown the ball two thirds of the time.
The Saints went up against a defense that leads the NFL in yards allowed per drive last week, and they came away with a 24-23 come-from-behind victory over the Baltimore Ravens, which was secured when Justin Tucker missed an extra point for the first time in his career. Still, that showed some real backbone for this team, which has now won five games in a row since the opening 48-40 loss to Tampa Bay. Brees has been absolutely sizzling; he is 77% accurate with 13 touchdowns, and has not thrown an interception yet. Two weeks ago, he set the all-time NFL yardage record, and last week he threw his 500th career touchdown pass.
If Minnesota can’t get things going on the ground, it is going to be significantly more difficult for Cousins to operate. And even though the Saints have struggled some in the secondary, they have done much better in recent weeks. And their run defense can’t be denied; in fact, they have allowed only 3.1 yards per carry, which is the best figure in the NFL – by a margin of a half-yard per attempt.
The reputation of Minnesota’s defense is well known, and they are pretty stiff against the run as well, allowing just 3.7 yards a pop. A lot of their pass defense is predicated upon getting pressure on the quarterback (21 sacks), but good luck with that against Brees, who has been dropped only nine times. The Vikings have faced an area of difficulty in defending opposing running backs who go out to catch the ball, and there are very few in the NFL who are better at that than Alvin Kamara, who has caught 40 passes already. Don’t get hung up on Michael Thomas’ 11.1-yard average either; he’s the guy who can get free from a number of different places on the field, meaning that it’s going to be very hard for the Vikings to match up with him.
Of course, on the other side, Adam Thielen has perhaps had a better season than any other wide receiver in the National Football League. He’s had at least 100 yards in every game thus far, totaling 822 on 67 receptions. So he is the guy New Orleans has to stop first. Can they do it?
We’re not sure that they can completely contain him, but since the elements are not going to be a factor here, we won’t expect Brees to encounter significant impediments. Even though Minnesota has been a pretty tough team at home, we wouldn’t put it past New Orleans to win this game straight-up.
