Ravens vs Steelers Odds – CJ’s Take

The Steelers, who were tied by the Cleveland Browns in the opener, then blasted by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (six TD passes), got off to a big lead in Tampa last Monday and then had to hang on for a 30-27 victory. They are demonstrating that they have a distance to travel on defense before they should be considered a serious threat to go to the Super Bowl.

As far as the Ravens are concerned, we are not sure what to make of them quite yet. They smoked Buffalo in the opener, but could not come back after almost getting blown off the field early against Cincinnati. Last week they took advantage of some sloppy Denver offense to beat the Broncos 27-14.

It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that Bell is out the door in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers are somewhat limited as to what they can get in return, because of the fact that they almost have to trade him, and he is in questionable football shape right now, having not participated in any drills or practices. They also don’t want to be trading him to any other AFC contender, so that cuts down on the possibilities. It is said that if they are lucky, they could get a second-round draft pick for him. That’s a travesty.

The guy who has replaced him in the backfield, cancer survivor James Conner, has thus far averaged 3.9 yards per carry and caught 15 passes. He doesn’t bring the same kind of effect that Bell has, but his teammates like him a lot better. We are not being facetious when we say that; one of the NFL “insider” reporters out there said that he has rarely seen teammates complain about someone’s holdout the way some of the members of Pittsburgh’s offensive unit are about Bell’s.

The Steelers are obviously vulnerable in the secondary, although they bring pressure. That is something they’ll have to concentrate on against Joe Flacco, who can get the ball down the field but sometimes holds the ball a little too long and has less mobility than anyone this side of Sam Bradford.

The Ravens have better receivers then they have had in the past, and it’s a fresh group that now includes John Brown and Michael Crabtree. The Steelers have covered only three of their last 12 home games, and John Harbaugh usually gets his Baltimore squad very keyed up for these games in the Steel City, as they have covered three of the last four visits, with one push. So the points may be well worth taking.
