Is there anything that can stop the locomotive that is the Carolina Panthers? There is a team that has racked up a 13-0 straight-up record and has the opportunity, if they can win these last three games, to make history. The New York Giants certainly stand in their way, and this is a highly-motivated team that still has a chance, and a very good one, to win its division. For the Panthers, it was almost like child’s play last week as they rolled over the Atlanta Falcons by the score of 38-0. In the process, they held the Falcons to just 230 yards, and they will play Atlanta again next week. What an improbable scenario for a team that had to win its last four games to capture the NFC South last season with a 7-8-1 record. But now, including those four victories, they have now emerged victorious in 17 consecutive regular-season contests.
The Giants needed some uplift last week. Reportedly there was some bickering in the locker room, and Eli Manning, not usually one to make passionate speeches, gave a bit of a pep talk to his teammates and then went out and put his money where his mouth was, so to speak, completing 27 out of 31 passes with four touchdowns in a Monday night victory over the Miami Dolphins. Odell Beckham had a pair of touchdowns, and he is now up to 1320 receiving yards on the season.
The Manning-Beckham connection is something that makes the Giants dangerous in this one. And, if you are a fan of past history, you may recall that back in 1998, the Denver Broncos came into the Meadowlands with a 13-0 record, and the Giants put an end to that. New York could make a case that they are a lot better than their 6-7 record would indicate, as they have blown no less than five different fourth-quarter leads. As it is, they are tied for the top spot in the NFC East, along with the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. They play the Eagles in the final game of the season, at home.
What can you say about Carolina, except that they have just done a tremendous job on defense and have surprised a lot of people on offense? What distinguishes him from some of the other quarterbacks who might be up for the award is that he is very effective on the ground as well, getting 480 yards with seven rushing touchdowns.
For the Giants, this will be an extremely tough nut to crack.
