Packers vs Patriots Odds – CJ’s Take

In some ways, Brady has had a season that is somewhat unlike him. He has completed 67.5% of his passes, but has also tossed seven interceptions. For most of this first half of the season he has been without a full complement of receivers, as Julian Edelman had to serve a suspension, and Josh Gordon was a late arrival. Rob Gronkowski has also battled injuries. But these guys are all on board now. They are hoping that running back Sony Michel can return from an injury, as he has impressed as a guy they have turned to as a featured back. In his absence, Cordarelle Patterson, a wide receiver who is better known as a return man, has been seeing time in the backfield.

That’s almost exactly what the Packers started doing with Ty Montgomery a couple of years ago, when they were short on running backs. He also returned kicks, and after a fumbled kickoff return, in which he did not follow the coaches’ directives, ruined Green Bay’s chances to mount a final drive in their 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He was then traded on Tuesday.

Aaron Rodgers has pulled off a couple of miracles this season, and he set the tone in the opener, leading the Packers to 21 unanswered points to beat the Chicago Bears. He has thrown 13 touchdown passes with only one interception this season.

Both of these quarterbacks have premier tight ends to work with. Brady obviously has Gronkowski, who is averaging 15.4 yards on his 29 receptions. As for Rodgers, he is in his first season throwing to Jimmy Graham, who has caught 28 passes for 370 yards. What Rodgers wants is to get something out of running back Aaron Jones, and there might be a pretty good chance of that, as he is logging the ball for 6.2 yards per carry. Green Bay’s running game has been a hit-and-miss proposition in recent years, but if they dealt Montgomery away they must be very confident in what they have.

New England has always made great use of its backs to catch passes, and one of the best in the business is James White, who has come up big in the post-season. White, in fact, has been Brady’s most frequent target, and by a considerable margin, as he has caught 55 passes. At the same time, one could expect that Gordon, who was signed as a free agent after he was cut by Cleveland, will become more and more of a factor as the season progresses. It should be noted that the Packers also traded safety Haha Clinton-Dix this week, and while that may be a wise move for the long run (he was probably going to leave as a free agent), there may be a negative impact this Sunday.

New England’s safeties have shown themselves to be somewhat vulnerable – all you had to do was watch their game with Kansas City to see that. So there will be some opportunities for Rodgers and his favorite receiver, Davante Adams, who likes to go downfield. But the Pats are 17-7-3 ATS in their last 27 regular season home games, and Green Bay is much less likely to “muscle up” on the defensive end.
