Oregon vs Michigan State - Week 2 College Football Betting Preview

Michigan State Licking Chops For Rematch with Oregon

By Charles Jay

The Michigan State Spartans thought they may have had a victory in hand last season when they took on the Oregon Ducks; after all, they held a nine-point lead and also one of the top defenses in all of college football. But they quickly found out that the Ducks were fully capable of trumping that – very quickly.

Now circumstances are at least somewhat different, as the Spartans get Oregon at home and don’t have to face off against a Heisman Trophy winner. They will clash with Oregon at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, with the kickoff scheduled for 8 PM ET. Customers at BetAnySports will get to place wagers even after that kickoff, as they test their abilities against the college football odds with Live Betting Extra.

This year it is Michigan State that has the hot NFL prospect behind center. Connor Cook is considered to be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation according to NFL scouts. And there are some football bettors who aren’t necessarily making too much of the Spartans’ so-so performance against Western Michigan last week, as they labored to a 37-24 win but gave up 365 yards through the air.

Oregon opened up its season against an FCS school, Eastern Washington, and they had the benefit of EWU’s quarterback from last year on their side this time. Vernon Adams, who was the two-time runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, emblematic of the best player at the FCS level, threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns before having to leave the game with a minor injury that is not expected to affect his status here.

What has to be a big concern for the Ducks is that they allowed 549 total yards (including 438 through the air) to Eastern Washington. Obviously with Cook more mature, the Spartans are perceived to be a better team offensively. Well, maybe that is the case, but they suffered a big loss with the departure of Jeremy Langford, who ran for 1522 yards last season.

The Spartans no doubt depend on their veteran offensive line, which yielded only eleven sacks in 2014, and the kind of discipline that coach Mark Dantonio has instilled, which has given this team a +32 turnover ratio over the last couple of seasons.

BetAnySports customers may have thought that Michigan State was on its way to an upset last season in Eugene, as they were ahead 27-18 in the second half as a 13-point underdog in the college football odds. But the Ducks tallied the last 28 points of the game. And the Oregon defense came up big, holding the Spartans to their second-lowest rushing total of the season.

At the moment Michigan State is ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top 25, with Oregon two spots below at #7. However, in the coaches’ poll, Oregon is fifth, with the Spartans right behind. It probably helps not only that MSU saw the Ducks’ scheme last year, but also that they faced another “go-go” team in Baylor in last year’s Cotton Bowl (which they won dramatically by a 42-41 score).
