The Colts will go with Scott Tolzien at the QB spot, and he saw limited action last season, completing 23 of 37 passes for 216 yards. And frankly, it’s kind of a mystery as to when Luck would be available. The whole atmosphere surrounding his shoulder, for the past couple of seasons, has been a subject of mystery, but there is no mystery about the fact that without him, Indianapolis doesn’t really have a prayer in the AFC South. Luck is one of those quarterbacks who will make negative plays – he was sacked 41 times last season, for example – but he also makes a lot of plays possible. And also makes the surrounding weaponry all that more effective. That includes TY Hilton, the wide receiver who had 1448 yards on 815.9-yard average last season.

As far as the Rams are concerned, they are hoping that Jared Goff, #1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, is able to make a quantum leap in his second season. Goff, who played a wide-open system at the University of California that did not exactly lend itself to the pro game, has had quite a period of adjustment.
One possible break the Colts may catch is that Aaron Donald, one of the more dominant defensive players in the NFL, should miss the opener, as he sat out the entire pre-season in a contract dispute. Donald is obviously disruptive, and also led the team with eight sacks last season.
On offense, management did its best to put more weapons at Goff’s disposal. Sammy Watkins was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, who are currently conducting something of a fire sale. And new coach Sean McVay, who is the youngest by far in the NFL (31) is said to have something of an innovative offensive mind. These days, that means you might have a twist or two to the West Coast offense that might work. But Goff has to be able to get the ball down the field a little better, or he is going to be toast. When throwing it anywhere from 11 to 20 yards be on the line of scrimmage, his quarterback rating was 27.9.
However, what the Rams will have to do is put Tolzien in some situations where he is very uncomfortable. In that regard, it’s good fortune that they have Wade Phillips on board. Phillips may be the best defensive coordinator at all of pro football, and he has some material to work with. The Rams could not move the football last year, and they probably would have drifted into the Pacific Ocean if not for some respectable defensive play. This one could be a low-scoring affair, although the intriguing storyline is to see how much Goff has really progressed.
