The Colts have had to endure the injury to Luck, with involves his throwing shoulder. And it is a subject of at least some controversy within the organization. He missed almost the whole camp, and sat out the season opener. Scott Tolzien, a rather limited quarterback out of Wisconsin, stood in for him and took a pounding in a 46-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Chuck Pagano’s team didn’t know what hit it.
The Cardinals committed four turnovers in a disappointing defeat at Detroit, and now they are back playing an early Sunday game. They could not stop Matthew Stafford last week, giving up four touchdown passes. and 367 total yards in the 35-23 defeat.
Of course, one of the storylines surrounding this game involves the return of Bruce Arians, who was an interim Colts coach under difficult circumstances when Pagano was diagnosed with cancer and took the team to the playoffs. That is what got him his gig with Arizona, and he is coming back to play in Indy for the first time since then.
He knows something about Pagano, obviously, and knows that his friend is not going to take last week’s embarrassment lying down. The Colts allowed Jared Goff to throw for over 300 yards against them. And this is a quarterback who struggled mightily last year as a rookie.
One thing that might make it more difficult for the Cardinals here is that they wile be without David Johnson, perhaps the most complete back to be found in the NFC, who is out with a wrist injury. He could be unavailable anywhere from two to three months. But as Arians points out, circumstances allowed David Johnson t have a chance to be a breakout player in the first place. That was an injury to Chris Johnson, the former 2000-yard rusher who has been re-signed. But the guy to keep an eye on is Elijhaa Penny, a second-year player from Idaho. He’s got some sneaky talent.
Meanwhile, Pagano was reportedly contemplating moving in a direction away from Tolzien. The backup is Jacoby Brissett, who saw brief action as a starter with New England last year when Tom Brady was serving his suspension.
