Notre Dame vs Clemson - Week 5 College Football Betting Preview

Notre Dame and Clemson Try to Stay Unbeaten

By Charles Jay

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been running roughshod over their opposition thus far, and they have been doing it in the face of major injuries. On Saturday they face a true hurdle as they pay a visit to treacherous “Death Valley” in taking on the Clemson Tigers in a game that is set to begin at 8 PM ET. The college football betting action continues even after the kickoff with in-game wagering for BetAnySports customers at Live Betting Extra.

Notre Dame had to say goodbye to former quarterback Everett Golson before the season, as he left to play at Florida State. That left things in the hands of Malik Zaire, who started two games last season, including the bowl game. But Zaire is now out for the year, and coach Brian Kelly has turned to redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer, a blue chip recruit who has shown uncommon poise in completing 68% of his passes.

The Irish also lost lead running back Tarean Folston, and have had to improvise there too. But they have not missed a beat, inserting converted wide receiver CJ Prosise, who is averaging 8.1 yards per carry. The result of this, along with a rock-ribbed defense, is a spotless slate that has landed Notre Dame into the #6 spot in the national rankings, according to the Associated Press. They are also 7th in the Coaches poll.

Sure, this looks like simply a “plug and play” situation for Notre Dame, which obviously recruits well. There is just a lot of depth here, and that goes for the defense too, as defensive lineman Jarron Jones was lost, but nine other starters returned, among them linebacker Jaylon Smith, who is unquestionably one of the best in the country.

Clemson wasn’t so lucky; the Tigers brought only three starters back from last year’s stop unit. So there have to be some questions about them. Have there been tests? Well, the closest thing to it was the last game against Louisville, but the Cardinals have been playing musical chairs among healthy quarterbacks.

BetAnySports patrons know that Clemson has the more experienced signal-caller, and DeShaun Watson is not disappointing. Even though he has been picked off three times, he has connected on 74% of his passes. But he is expected to be without all-ACC wide receiver Mike Williams in this game. Wayne Gallman (5.8 ypc) has offered great support out of the backfield.

Dabo Swinney’s team is #11 in the Coaches poll and 12th in the AP rankings, but they have covered just four of their last eleven games. They have to be acknowledged to have a scheduling edge, as they have had sixteen days between games. The Irish, after slamming Georgia Tech two weeks ago, had a hard time with UMass last Saturday, leading just 21-20 at one point before pulling away for a 62-27 victory.
