NFL Preview Week 12 - Cardinals vs Seahawks

The 9-1 Cardinals Get Huge Test at Seattle vs. Seahawks

By Charles Jay

Don’t look now, but the team with the best record in the NFL is the Arizona Cardinals, who continue to amaze. Of course, many BetAnySports customers may be thinking they will get the stiffest test yet as they have to travel to face off against the Seattle Seahawks, who don’t seem to have duplicated the form they had last year when they won the Super Bowl. Football betting action at CenturyLink field is slated to get underway at 4:05 PM ET on Sunday.

Arizona is 9-1 straight-up on the season, covering eight of their 10 games against the football pointspread. They currently hold a three-game lead in the NFC West. The Seahawks are 6-4 straight-up, tied with the San Francisco 49ers for second place in the division. Seattle has underperformed against the number, with a 4-6 ATS record.

Interestingly enough, when they last visited Seattle, the Cardinals really shut the Seahawks down. Russell Wilson completed only eleven of his 27 passes for 89 yards and was sacked four times. Seattle had just ten first downs in a 17-10 home defeat, which was the only time they were beaten in their stomping grounds last season.

Seattle can count on a bruising running game most of the time, and indeed the Seahawks have averaged 5.5 yards per carry. A couple of weeks ago against the New York Giants, they ran for 350 yards. But Arizona is very tough against opposition running attacks, permitting only 3.5 yards per attempt.

Folks who analyze the football betting odds to wager at BetAnySports might be somewhat mystified over how the Cardinals have compiled such a great record. After all, they don’t seem to have a very productive running attack (3.1 yards per attempt) and neither quarterback Carson Palmer, who is out for the season, nor his back up, Drew Stanton, who is now at the helm, is really all that spectacular. On top of that, Arizona has been outgained by the opposition this year. Yet this team has wins over the San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, all of which have a pretty solid shot of appearing in the post-season.

It appears that this team has gotten the job done the old-fashioned way – by playing very solid defense and taking care of the football. The Cardinals have allowed just 1.44 points per drive, which is second in the NFL, and have intercepted 15 passes. The Cards have also committed only eight turnovers. So they are doing enough to win.

Some BetAnySports patrons may think they’ll have to do even more than that. Seattle has managed to keep its turnovers down as well, and in fact leads the league with the least number of TO’s per drive. And they have a big edge over Arizona in the rushing department. Wilson contributes to that with 571 yards, which averages out to 7.7 yards per attempt. He is not afraid to take off with the football. Center Max Unger is out of this game for the Seahawks, however, and absences at that position always seem to affect timing on the offensive line. Without Unger, Seattle ran for just four yards in the final nine minutes last week against Kansas City (a 24-20 defeat).
