Since Marshawn Lynch does not really talk much to the media (is that news to you?), others may have to speak FOR him from time to time. You’ve seen that even during press conferences, and perhaps that may have been the case this week as his former teammate and close friend, Michael Robinson, revealed that the Pro Bowl back is considering retirement rather than suiting up another season with the Seattle Seahawks.
This carries with it some level of significance, since the Seahawks are listed as the favorites to win Super Bowl 50, as they are posted at BetAnySports.
Lynch, of course, was a key figure in what will undoubtedly endure as one of the biggest stories in Super Bowl history, for doing nothing. And that was the problem, as he was not given the ball on the one-yard line on a second-round play in which Russell Wilson was intercepted, thus handing the New England Patriots a victory.
The entire football world speculated as to why Lynch had not had an opportunity to apply Seattle’s bread-and-butter on that final drive. Whether those thoughts went through Lynch’s mind is not known. But a player like would have to be scratching his head.
Here is the list of the top teams as they are listed in the NFL futures odds at BetAnySports:
Seattle Seahawks +550
New England Patriots +600
Green Bay Packers +725
Denver Broncos +1100
Dallas Cowboys +1500
Indianapolis Colts +1700
Philadelphia Eagles +2100
San Francisco 49ers +2250
Baltimore Ravens +2500
Detroit Lions +2700
Pittsburgh Steelers +2700
Robinson says that although he believes Marshawn Lynch is going to play next year, he did remark on ESPN 710 in Seattle that he really didn’t know what he was going to do in the 2014 season until training camp, and many people remember that he staged a holdout until some terms of his contract were changed.
In this off-season there is an issue regarding a contract extension that was offered to him, which would have him playing beyond 2015. There is also another deal the Seahawks have in the works that may impact what Lynch does. It is with quarterback Russell Wilson, who had to play for rookie wages the first three years. As BetAnySports customers may have heard, the Seahawks look upon him as the “face” of the franchise; certainly someone safer to go with than Lynch, who is not public-friendly and has engaged in acts of vulgarity (like grabbing his crotch) on the field.
And they are going to pay him that way. Reportedly they are ready to offer Wilson a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the NFL, with a salary upwards of $20 million. The deal they are offering Lynch would pay him half that amount in 2015. One has to wonder whether Lynch feels he might be getting the shorter end of that deal. And as long as everyone else wants to speculate as to why offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell called a pass instead of a run on that fateful second-down play in the Super Bowl, maybe it’s because they would much rather have seen Wilson be the hero than Lynch.
Is Lynch thinking that way too?
