Jets Want to Put the Pressure on Raiders’ Rookie QB
By Charles Jay
The New York Jets like to think that they have made some noticeable strides on offense, including more maturity out of their young quarterback. And the Oakland Raiders are in the position the Jets were in last season; that is, they are starting a raw rookie in the opening game, and he will no doubt have to take his lumps along the way. The Jets play host to Oakland in NFL betting action at Chinese Bookie that is scheduled to kick off at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Neither of these teams made the playoffs last season. The Jets finished 8-8, and actually over-achieved against the pro football point spread, chalking up 10-6 record. Meanwhile, the Raiders were just 4-12, with the 7-9 mark against the points.
Oakland went out and acquired veteran help at quarterback in the off-season, hoping that a change of scenery would do Matt Schaub some good, after he went through a horror story with the Houston Texans. But Schaub will not be the starter on opening day; instead, that assignment goes to Derek Carr, the rookie out of Fresno State who was drafted in the second round. The Jets acquired Michael Vick, but the real intention of that was for him to serve as a backup to Geno Smith, who needs to turn his game around quickly.
In the NFL betting lines that have been posted at Chinese Bookie on this game, the Jets are a favorite at home:
New York Jets -5.5
Oakland Raiders +5.5
Over 40 Points -110
Under 40 Points -110
Certainly the Jets are committed to Smith, who threw a dozen touchdown passes, but also 21 interceptions as a rookie, finishing with the lowest quarterback rating among starters in the NFL. They got him some help in the off-season, acquiring running back Chris Johnson, who once had over 2000 yards with Tennessee, and wide receiver Eric Decker, who caught 87 passes for the Denver Broncos in 2013. NFL bettors have also heard a lot of talk from people on the Jets’ staff about how impressed they are with Smith’s progress in training camp. This was due to a lot of work in the off-season, including extensive film study.
The question among many Chinese Bookie customers is whether Carr is ready for the NFL. He had a sensational performance in the final pre-season game against Seattle, completing 11 of his 13 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns. The staff might have put a lot of stock in that. Oakland also made a move to bring aboard Maurice Jones-Drew, who once led the league in rushing with Jacksonville, and he will combine with Darren McFadden in the backfield. Football bettors know that Rex Ryan loves the blitz, and you can expect a lot of pressure to be put on the rookie.
They will have to be successful with it, as New York is very thin in the secondary. Cornerback Dee Milliner (high ankle sprain) is probably out of this game, and another cornerback, Dexter McDougle, is gone for the season with a torn ACL. Dimitri Patterson was cut after some off-field drama. Leon McFadden, who was just signed, may be pressed into extensive action. The Jets will go with Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls at the two cornerback spots, and they will just have to compensate with a pass rush, which means Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson need to come up big.
Oakland’s offensive line has to hold up. And we should point out to Chinese Bookie customers that they don’t have a very good recent history in the Eastern time zone. In fact, they have lost 13 straight games when coming to the east coast. That is one of the reasons coach Dennis Allen decided to fly his team in on Thursday, rather than wait a day or two later.
