Wisconsin vs Florida – CJ’s Take:
Wisconsin currently has a 27-9 straight-up record, and they are 17-16 against the points. They were a big disappointment in the conference tournament, losing the final 71-56 to Michigan. But they have made up for it since, first beating a pretty tough Virginia Tech squad, and then defeating Villanova, which was the #1 team in the nation, as well as the top overall seed in the tournament, not to mention the defending national champions. The Badgers shot 53% in the game and really took control down the stretch, scoring 15 of the games last 20 points. Wisconsin, coached by Greg Gard, went into the tournament ranked 21st in the Coaches’ poll and 25th by the Associated Press. Now they are just two steps from the Final Four.
Florida was expected by some people to be an upset victim at the hands of East Tennessee State in their tournament opener, but they got by that one, before really putting the defensive clamps on Virginia, holding the Cavaliers below 30% shooting in a 65-39 victory. They are 26-8 straight-up and 19-13 ATS. The Gators have certainly proven to be better than their #17 ranking by the coaches and #20 spot in the Associated Press poll.
Wisconsin is one of those teams that likes to play a deliberate style, and that is evidenced by their average possession length on offense, which is slower than all but eight teams among the 351 in Division I ball. That’s okay with Florida, which likes to make its opponents work for a good shot. But the Gators also like to force turnovers, which they have done 21.1% of the time on the part of the opponent. Wisconsin isn’t necessarily the sharpest three-point shooting team, and the Gators will be ready for them, as they have allowed only 30.4% from downtown.
But as a lot of BetAnySports patrons are aware, Florida has not been the best shooting team themselves, in like Wisconsin, they rank outside the top 100 in the nation in both two-point and three-point accuracy. Their calling card is defense, and they don’t seem to have lost a step, even with center John Egbunu out for the season with an injury. Lavarrius Hayes has helped pick up the slack, and the 39 points they allowed to Virginia was the lowest on the part of a team from a power conference in the NCAA Tournament in the last 17 years. In fact, only one team in the last 15 games has exceeded 45% from the floor against Florida. So sit back and enjoy a chess match between two teams who are both ranked among the top 10 in the country in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency.
