Manchester United vs Hull City – Head to Head:

  • These two teams met just last Thursday at the KC Stadium in Hull in the second leg of the English League Cup semifinal with Hull winning 2-1. Man United won their home leg 2-0 two weeks earlier and won the series 3-2 on aggregate. The clubs also met in league in league action in August with Man United winning 1-0 in Hull. Prior to that, they met twice in the 2014/15 season with United winning 3-0 at Old Trafford and drawing 0-0 at Hull. The two teams have met just 30 times in the past with United winning 20, losing six and drawing the other four. Hull has just one victory in the last 13 encounters with a draw and 11 losses.

Manchester United – A Closer Look:

Man United’s last league outing was a come-from-behind 1-1 draw at Stoke City courtesy of an injury-time marker by Wayne Rooney, which was his record-setting 250th goal for the club. They enter the game in sixth place in the Premier League after 22 games with 41 points from 11 wins, eight draws and three defeats. They’ve scored 33 goals and allowed 21 against. United opened the league with three straight wins and have won just eight of their past 19 league outings with seven victories in the past 14. Their six-game league winning streak was halted recently with a 1-1 home draw against Liverpool and have now drawn their past two league matches.

However, United has just one loss in their past 19 games overall and has 17 wins in their past 29 outings in all competitions. These 19 matches consist of 14 wins, four draws and a defeat and they also have eight draws in their last 16 league matches. In league play at home, United has five victories, five draws and single defeat this season with 17 goals for and nine against. They trail league-leading Chelsea by 14 points and are six behind second-place Arsenal, five back of third-place Tottenham Hotspur, four behind fourth-place Liverpool and two points back of fifth-place Manchester City.

Manager Jose Mourinho has a relatively healthy squad to choose from as James Wilson is the only player on the injury list and could miss the rest of the campaign. However, defender Eric Bailly is away at the African Cup of Nations and Memphis Depay has been loaned to French club Lyon while defender Morgan Schneiderlin was sold to Everton.

Hull City – A Closer Look:

Hull’s last league match was a 2-0 away defeat in London to league-leading Chelsea. Hull was promoted to the Premier League at end of last season, but there’s a pretty good chance they’ll be relegated back to the second-tier Championship League when the 2016/17 campaign is over. The club currently has only 16 points after 22 league contests out of a possible 66 points. They occupy 19th position in the 20-team league with just four wins, four draws and 13 losses. They’ve scored 20 goals and allowed 47 allowed. They have just one triumph win in their past 11 league contests with three draws and seven defeats and have been outscored 23-10 in those games.

Hull is sits a single one point in front of last-place Sunderland and is tied with 18th-place Crystal Palace on points. However, they’re 19th on the table due to their inferior goal differential. There is some light at the end of the tunnel though since Hull is only a pair of points back of 17th-place Swansea City and the safety zone. Hull has just one win and one draw away from home in league play this season with six goals for and 26 against. New manager Marco Silva has some injury woes to deal with as midfielder Ryan Mason is questionable. Midfielders Markus Henriksen and Brian Lenihan are out as well as forward William Keane and defender Alex Bruce. Defender Moses Odubajo is out for the season.

In addition, Ahmed Elmohamady and Dieumerci Mbokani are away at the African Cup of Nations. Hull recently signed winger Lazar Markovic on loan from Liverpool for the rest of the season, but sold forward Robert Snodgrass to West Ham for 10.2 million pounds. Other newcomers in the January transfer window include Oumar Niasse from Everton, Evandro from FC Porto and Omar Elabdellaoui from Olympiacos. Those leaving Hull on loan are Harvey Rodgers to Accrington Stanley, Jonathan Edwards to Accrington Stanley, goaltender Allan McGregor to Cardiff City. Jake Livermore was also sold to West Bromwich Albion.

Manchester United vs Hull City – Takeaway:

Hull surprised United in the League Cup 2-1 at home last week, but United may not have been at their best since they knew they’d advance with a draw. Both squads better show up though if Hull wants to climb out of the relegation zone and United hopes to finish in the top four.
