Detroit Lions – A Closer Look:

Detroit was hoping to get off to a 2-0 start in the 2016 campaign, but Matthew Stafford was picked off late in the contest against Tennessee last Sunday and were edged 16-15. Detroit had a shot at a late field goal, but Stafford decided to pass the ball and paid for it when it was intercepted by Perrish Cox. Detroit took far too many penalties in the game and lost 138 yards because of 17 of them. To make things worse, the Lions saw three touchdowns called back due to penalties.

The Detroit offense should be able to cause Green Bay some trouble on Sunday as the Lions rank sixth in the league in passing at 285 yards per game and their 126.5 rushing yards each outing ranks 10th. Stafford had a rocky outing in the pocket against the Tennessee Titans as he went 20 for 44 in passing for 260 yards with a touchdown to go along with the interception. He was also sacked on three occasions. The Lions’ offensive line will need to be at its best since the Packers’ defense has already registered seven sacks so far in two games.

Green Bay Packers – A Closer Look:

Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers had a good outing against the Lions the last time they met and the Packers have gone 7-3 ATS and 9-1 SU in their past 10 home encounters with Detroit. Rodgers and his tight end teammate Richard Rodgers teamed up for a late-game Hail Mary last December to down the Lions 27-23 in Motown. The Packers will be hoping they don’t have to rely on a late, lucky play this weekend. If they hope to rebound from last week’s loss to the Vikings though, they’ll need to do a better job protecting their QB Rodgers.

There was a lot of pressure on Rodgers in the pocket against Minnesota and lost a total of 33 yards after being sacked five times. Rodgers went 20 for 36 in passing and managed 213 yards in the air. He threw a touchdown pass and was picked off once. Running back Eddie Lacy will need to help Rodgers out when he can. He carried the ball just a dozen times last week for 50 yards against a tough Minnesota defense. He may find things a bit easier on Sunday as Detroit allows 110.5 yards against on the ground per game which ranks 19th in the league. The Packers’ rushing defense ranks the best in the NFL after two weeks as they’ve given up an average of just 39 yards on the ground per contest.

Next up for both teams:

  • Detroit is at Chicago Sunday, October 2nd
  • Green Bay has a bye in Week 4
