Jets vs Jaguars Odds – CJ’s Take
Jacksonville beat New England 31-20 a couple of weeks ago, looking very much like a championship-level team. But last week they faced a Tennessee team with a banged-up offensive line and a quarterback (Marcus Mariota) who was forced into the action even though he couldn’t even grip the ball correctly. Yet Jacksonville limped off its own home field with a 9-6 defeat.
And you can’t just blame it on the absence of running back Leonard Fournette, who was injured. This effort was just lackluster from a number of different points of view. Blake Bortles threw the ball 34 times for just 155 yards.
Now the Jaguars are hoping that Fournette can return to jump-start the ground attack and that their defense can be at least somewhat intimidating for rookie quarterback Sam Darnold for of the Jets.
Donald’s NFL debut was easy, but that was because the Jets’ defense was able to force Matthew Stafford of Detroit into a lot of mistakes. Things got a little more difficult for the rookie in subsequent games against Miami and Cleveland. In the latter, he was actually outplayed by fellow rookie Baker Mayfield as the Browns rallied from a 14-0 deficit to beat the Jets.
Obviously, with the kind of defense Jacksonville has, it’s the kind of thing where they can take a young quarterback to “school.” And so the offensive line has to really be on its toes, with the running game supporting Donald’s efforts as much as it can. Isaiah Crowell well has been a pickup from the off-season who has been adequate, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. But they’ll need a little bit more.
Opponents of the Jaguars have converted only 32.5% on third down, and so Jacksonville can play the run very well, they could possibly force the rookie into some rough third down situations. At the same time, you really worry about the kind of bummer the Jags can throw out there if they couldn’t demonstrate anything better against Tennessee last week. Last year a rebuilding Jets team defeated the Jags 23-20 in overtime. It might make sense to take the points once again.
