NFL Odds – Jets Look to Extinguish Dolphins’ Flickering Hopes
Well, the Miami Dolphins had been looking like a freight train gathering momentum right after Dan Campbell took over as the interim coach, but that train has slowed down considerably. In fact, last week the Dolphins look like a team that was just trying to get to the depot. On Sunday they will try to keep their faint playoff hopes alive as they travel to face the New York Jets, who have been slumping as well. The Dolphins are now 3-3 under Campbell, who is trying to make a case for himself to keep the job of head coach into next season. Losing three out of four is not going to help his case, although it is not the easiest thing in the world to emerge victorious at New England or Buffalo. The simple fact is that in order to establish a winning “program,” you have to be teams from within your own division, and Miami has not done that at all. In fact, they are 0-4 against AFC East opponents. So this is a necessary game for them if they want to start reversing that.
For the Jets, part of the game plan is going to be giving Chris Ivory the ball early and often. But Ivory has not been doing the “ground and pound” the way he was earlier in the season. He had only 36 rushing yards against Houston last weekend, and his slump, if you will, has had quite a bit to do with the Jets’ inability to get enough offense going to score victories. Fitzpatrick is well-traveled, and indeed experienced, but he is always going to be a journeyman, and the numbers reflect that this season. Fitzpatrick recently broke his thumb and had to get it operated on, but we’re not sure that has such a tremendous effect on his play. If Ryan Tannehill, who is hot-and-cold himself, winds up hitting the mark on a consistent basis, the Jets offense is going to have to work overtime. But keep this in mind – Miami has converted less than 28% of their third-down opportunities this season. That is well below average.
