Falcons vs Broncos – CJ’s Take:
The Falcons lost their season opener 31-24 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the boo birds were certainly out. But they have come back with consecutive victories over Oakland, New Orleans, and Carolina, racking up the yardage at a very high rate. Julio Jones had 300 yards receiving last week against Carolina, and of course, we don’t need to tell you that the Panthers are the team that faced the Broncos last year in the Super Bowl. Matt Ryan currently leads the NFL with 1473 passing yards, and the Falcons have averaged almost 47 yards per drive, which is also tops in the league.
Denver, however, has been on a rampage on defense, sacking opposition quarterbacks 17 times. Von Miller is picking up where he left off last season, with 5.5 sacks, and the quarterback situation has been, in a relative sense, taken care of, as Trevor Siemian stepped in and did the job after the retirement of Peyton Manning and the departure of Brock Osweiler. Of course, Siemian got injured last week, at which point rookie Paxton Lynch was inserted into the lineup, with success, as the Broncos scored a 27-7 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Siemian has been listed as questionable for this game, although he has stated during the week that he fully expects to get the start. But even if Lynch has to play, the Denver offense won’t look all that much different. Lynch completed 14 of his 24 passes for 170 yards in the second half against Tampa Bay, and he certainly is an imposing figure at 6-foot-7. With the Broncos would like to do here is to emphasize the running game a little bit more, to take advantage of what might be a soft Atlanta defensive front. The ground game is not quite there yet, but it might come alive against this opponent. CJ Anderson had 19 carries for 49 yards last week, and they are hopefully going to work Dovantae Booker, the rookie out of Utah, into the mix a little more.
It had to be very impressive for VietBet patrons to watch the Falcons run up 571 total yards against the Carolina defense, which, needless to say, gets a lot of respect. They have now scored 152 points in four games, although of course the defenses of the Raiders and Saints are nothing to write home about.
But Ryan meets up with a whole different animal this time around. Denver dropped Jameis Winston five times last week, and intercepted him twice. They are allowing only 16 points per game, and it can be argued that there quarterbacking is at about the same level it was last season, considering that Peyton Manning had something of an off-year. Once again, this is about defense, and Atlanta’s ability to move against a unit that is arguably the best in the business.
Next up for both teams:
- The Falcons visit Seattle Sunday, October 16th
- Denver is at San Diego Thursday, October 13th
