Atletico Madrid vs Leicester City – Head to Head:

  • The two clubs have met four times in the past with Atletico Madrid going unbeaten with three wins and a draw and outscoring Leicester 7-2. Atletico has four wins and two draws in their past six games in all competitions while Leicester has six wins out of seven since manager Claudio Ranieri was replaced by Craig Shakespeare. Leicester was eliminated from European competition by Atletico Madrid in the 1961/62 European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as the 1997/98 UEFA Cup.

Atletico Madrid – A Closer Look:

Atletico Madrid enters the contest in third place in the Spanish league after their 1-1 away draw with cross-town rivals Real Madrid on the weekend. They don’t have a realistic shot at winning the league title this season as they’re currently in third place, 10 points behind leaders Real Madrid with Real also having a game in hand. Atletico has 62 points on the season from 18 wins, eight draws and five defeats with 56 goals for and 24 against. They’re also just one point ahead of fifth-place Sevilla.

This is the fourth year in a row Atletico has been in the Champions League quarterfinals and ninth time overall. Their record is currently 5-3. Atletico lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League Final last season 5-3 in a penalty shootout. It was Atletico’s third appearance and loss in the Final, but they have won several other European competitions. They made last year’s final eight after beating Dutch team PSV Eindhoven 8-7 in a penalty shootout after both games ended in 0-0 draws. It was the first time two teams had failed to score a goal in a Champions League two-legged series.

Atletico won Group D in this year’s group stage with five wins and a loss for 15 points while scoring seven goals, conceding two and winning all three of their home matches. The Spanish club has played 23 games against English opposition with nine victories, five losses and nine draws with 33 goals for and 28 against. Five wins and five draws have come at home while they’ve won two, drawn four and lost four in England. They’ve also played English clubs three times on neutral grounds in cup finals with two wins and a loss. Atletico has 28 wins, four draws and just two losses in their past 34 home European games.

Leicester City – A Closer Look:

Leicester has been on a roll since changing managers with six wins out of seven, including six in a row until Sunday. Their last outing resulted in a 4-2 loss at Everton in English Premier League play. They now sit in 11th place in the 20-team English league with 36 points from 10 wins, six draws and 15 losses while scoring 39 goals and conceding 51. Leicester topped Group G in the first stage of the Champions League competition with four wins, a draw and a defeat for 13 points with seven goals for and six against.

This is the first time Leicester has played in a European tournament beyond Christmas and it was helped by winning all three of their home games in the group stage this season. They’ve played in just five two-legged ties in Europe in the past and have managed to win two of them. Leicester was eliminated from European competition by Atletico Madrid Spanish in two of their three previous outings. The Spanish side knocked them out of the 1961/62 European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as the 1997/98 UEFA Cup.

Leicester City has played just six previous games against Spanish clubs with only one win to their name to go along with a draw and four defeats while being outscored 9-5. They have three losses away from home against Spanish opposition with a win, loss and draw at home at King Power Stadium.

Atletico Madrid vs Leicester City – Takeaway:

  • Leicester really needs to keep this game as close as possible if they hope to advance. An away goal or two would do wonders for them.
