Atletico lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League Final last season 5-3 in a penalty shootout. It was Atletico’s third appearance and loss in the Final, but they have won several other European competitions. They made last year’s final eight after beating Dutch team PSV Eindhoven 8-7 in a penalty shootout after both games ended in 0-0 draws. They now sit in 11th place in the 20-team English league with 36 points from 10 wins, six draws and 15 losses while scoring 39 goals and conceding 51. Leicester topped Group G in the first stage of the Champions League competition with four wins, a draw and a defeat for 13 points with seven goals for and six against.
This is the first time Leicester has played in a European tournament beyond Christmas and it was helped by winning all three of their home games in the group stage this season. They’ve played in just five two-legged ties in Europe in the past and have managed to win two of them. Leicester was eliminated from European competition by Atletico Madrid Spanish in two of their three previous outings. The Spanish side knocked them out of the 1961/62 European Cup Winners’ Cup as well as the 1997/98 UEFA Cup.
Leicester City has played just six previous games against Spanish clubs with only one win to their name to go along with a draw and four defeats while being outscored 9-5. They have three losses away from home against Spanish opposition with a win, loss and draw at home at King Power Stadium.
