Eagles vs Jets - Week 3 NFL Betting Preview

Eagles at Critical Juncture as They Visit Jets

By Charles Jay

Chip Kelly is really on the spot right now. The Philadelphia Eagles coach, who lobbied very hard and played politics with ownership in an effort to gain complete control over personnel moves for his team, is watching as those maneuvers have worked out rather badly thus far. So it is naturally with a sense of urgency that the Eagles take the field on Sunday against the New York Jets, who have already provided pleasant surprises for their first-year coach Todd Bowles. It is a short trip up the turnpike for Philly, and the game gets underway on Sunday at 1 PM ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. After the opening kickoff, BetAnySports customers can avail themselves of Live Betting Extra, which allows them to place wagers on the contest as it is happening. That’s exciting!

One can only imagine that DeMarco Murray will get untracked at some point in time. But the big free-agent pickup from Dallas, where he had 1845 rushing yards last season, has had his per-carry average measured in INCHES. We’re not kidding; Murray has rushed 21 times for 11 yards, and that is 19 inches per attempt. The other acquisition who was supposed to back him up, Ryan Mathews, has been almost as non-productive, with four carries for four yards. And Sam Bradford, who has spent most of the last two years in rehabilitation from knee injuries, has a ratio of two touchdowns to four interceptions.

Does it sound like things are a little desperate? They most certainly will be, if the Eagles cannot come out of the Meadowlands with a victory.

The Philadelphia offense was almost non-existent last week against Dallas, as they totaled only 226 yards. But they are fortunate in that Bradford has suffered only one sack. And at least there are a couple of working parts in wide receiver Jordan Matthews (16 catches for 182 yards) and Darren Sproles, who has caught 11 passes out of the backfield and is actually this team’s leading rusher. Of course, the Eagles are not going to the playoffs if Sproles remains their leading ground-gainer. And if Philadelphia continues to allow opponents to hold the ball for 39 minutes per game, as has been the average over the first two contests, that defense is going to get worn out.

BetAnySports customers are already getting the sense that losing Geno Smith to a broken jaw incurred during a locker room skirmish was probably a good thing for this club in the long run. Not that Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to blow anybody’s doors off, but at least he has been a decent game manager and has found his receivers at a 64% rate. Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker have been an effective combination at wide receiver, totaling 297 yards between them. So far the Eagles have allowed almost 71% accuracy on the part of opposing quarterbacks, while the Jets have really gotten the job done on defense, permitting only 56.5%. And let’s not forget that New York stymied Andrew Luck last week, holding the Colts to just seven total points. However, keep an eye on Darrelle Revis, who on Friday said he was unsure as whether he was going to play, as he has a groin strain.
