Ohio State vs Clemson – CJ’s Take:
Ohio State, of course, is coach by Urban Meyer, who has lost only five games in five seasons. His stock-in- trade is the spread option offense, and you could not imagine a better guy running it been JT Barrett, who is very steady with his arm, throwing 24 touchdown passes with only five interceptions, and is also a considerable rushing threat (847 yards). The way this offense is constructed, the H-back can play a big role, and Curtis Samuel is multi-dimensional, to say the least. Samuel, who might be as dynamic as any offensive player in the country, caught 65 passes for 822 yards and also ran for 704 yards from scrimmage.
Ohio State did not play in the Big Ten championship game, because their only loss was to Penn State, and the Nittany Lions had only one conference loss. That made for a bizarre set of circumstances indeed. The Buckeyes are 11-1 straight-up and 6-6 against the spread. Clemson comes into this game with a record of 12-1 and they are 5-7 against the points.
When you talk about dynamic players, certainly Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson fits that description. Watson, who went absolutely wild in last year’s national title game, came back to school as one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy, and he hasn’t disappointed a whole lot. Watson completed a little more than tw- thirds of his throws with 37 touchdowns. He also and 525 rushing yards, BUT he was somewhat mistake-prone, throwing 15 interceptions. Last year he got more help from running back Wayne Gallman, but unfortunately Gallman has been bothered by a number of injuries this season. Still, he came on toward the end and went just over 1000 yards, with 15 touchdowns on the ground. And when it comes to a connection by air, you will not find many wide receivers more highly-regarded than Mike Williams, who will almost unquestionably be a first-round NFL draft pick. Williams was on the other end of 85 of Watson’s throws, and scored 10 touchdowns.
