Georgia at South Carolina
The Georgia Bulldogs are very firmly in the top ten after a dominant second half drive them past Clemson in the season opener. Now they have to face a team that got behind the eight-ball early and is on a mission to prove that it belongs in the national rankings. The South Carolina Gamecocks (#24 in the AP poll and #23 by the coaches) were crushed by Texas A&M and Kenny Hill in the opener, and that created a lot of questions among bettors about a defense that was supposed to be strong, even after losing Jedeveon Clowney. Running back Mike Davis has been dealing with a rib injury, but he has to come up big for Steve Spurrier’s team. But the back who will be in the spotlight here is Todd Gurley, the Bulldog who is firmly a candidate for the Heisman Trophy after 198 yards on fifteen carries against Clemson (with three scores, by the way).
Georgia, which ranked sixth in the coaches’ poll and by the Associated Press, looked like a team that could be one of those contenders for the championship playoff, although league play in the SEC is going to shake a lot of that out. UCLA at Texas
The Texas Longhorns might be a team in a lot of trouble. And on Saturday they take the field at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX against the UCLA Bruins (8 PM ET on Fox), in a game in which they will be trying to redeem themselves from an absolutely disastrous effort against BYU, where they went into the contest seeking revenge for last year’s defeat, where they allowed 550 yards on the ground. Well, this time BYU had only 248 yards rushing, but Texas still came out on the short end of a 41-7 loss. The ‘Horns have three injured players on the starting offensive line, and quarterback David Ash, who is out with a concussion, was replaced by Tyrone Swoopes, who isn’t nearly as effective. UCLA has a QB in Brett Hundley who was touted as a Heisman candidate, but the Bruins have been far from impressive, with just on offensive touchdown against Virginia in the opener and a life-and-death struggle against Memphis last week. On the road, UCLA, which is ranked 12th in both major polls, is a 7.5-point favorite in college football betting lines posted at BetAnySports.
Tennessee at Oklahoma
The Tennessee Volunteers, after very solid performances against Utah State and Arkansas State in the first two games, have served notice that they may be ready for bigger things. Well, they are going to get it, as they visit Norman to play the Oklahoma Sooners in ABC-televised football betting action that begins at 8 PM ET. The Sooners are 3rd in the coaches’ poll and 4th in the AP rankings, and haven’t been severely tested. Tennessee has gone almost eight seasons since they have beaten a nationally-ranked team on the road, and while sophomore quarterback Justin Worley has improved, he is still a work in progress. Oklahoma lays 20.5 points at BetAnySports.
Central Florida at Missouri
The Central Florida Knights, who did not have a whole lot of success in Dublin as they lost to Penn State, will go with a new quarterback at the helm as they tackle what is perhaps an even bigger challenge on Saturday (Noon ET on SEC Network). UCF, which had last week off, got a nice effort out of backup QB Justin Holman, who came on in relief and throwing for 204 yards. They face the Missouri Tigers, who got the win and the cover at Toledo, in what was something of a homecoming for former Rockets coach Gary Pinkel, who is now at the controls for Mizzou (#22 in the coaches’ poll). Maty Mauk has clearly made the QB job in Columbia his own, as he had 325 yards and five TD’s for last year’s SEC runner-ups. keep an eye on Missouri, which did get a whole lot of pre-season attention. Nevada at Arizona
Finally, one of the more intriguing games will involve the Arizona Wildcats, who had over 700 yards in their opener against UNLV but had to go right down to the wire against Texas-San Antonio last week. They stay at home on Saturday to host the Nevada Wolf Pack, which showed some defensive wherewithal against Washington State last time out but will be facing a whole new animal here. Wazzou hardly ran the ball, but that is exactly what Arizona prides itself on in Rich Rodriguez’s ground-oriented spread attack. And NCAA football bettors still remember that Nevada was the worst team in the country in defending the run last year. Accordingly, Arizona is laying 16 points in the football lines at BetAnySports.
