Fabulous Five College Football Betting Match Ups For September 6

By Charles Jay

Last week we got the college football season kicked off with a few interesting performances, including one by Texas A&M in their rout of South Carolina. But there really weren’t many more key match ups. This week that changes. Several of the games that are on this week’s schedule may have national championship playoff implications, and we are going to look at five of the top games that are on tap.

USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinals

  • In one of them, slated for 3:30 PM ET in Palo Alto, USC makes a visit to Stanford, which is seeking some revenge for the surprising defeat it suffered at the Coliseum last year at the hands of the Trojans, which occurred when they were ranked #5 in the country. That lost didn’t derail the Cardinal on their way to the Pac 12 title, but it hurt nonetheless. Stanford is once again a national power; ranked 10th in the country in the USA Today poll and #13 by the Associated Press. But they are facing a USC squad that looks like it is much more dynamic than last year’s version. Southern Cal got its season started off right with a 52-13 win over Fresno State, in which they gained 701 yards. Steve Sarkisian has instituted a hurry-up offensive approach and all indications are that Cody Kessler has taken a step forward under his tutelage. Stanford may not able be able to play smash mouth all that easy against these Trojans, but college football bettors should note that Kevin Hogan has all of his top receivers back from last year.
  • Stanford is favored by 2.5 points, according to Vietbet.

Michigan State Spartans at Oregon Ducks

  • Another Pac-12 team that has designs on the national championship playoff faces a genuine test this weekend. The Oregon Ducks, who are ranked third in both major polls, play host to the Michigan State Spartans, who are sixth in the USA Today rankings and seventh with Associated Press. Michigan State has covered ten of its last 12 games as an underdog against the college football odds, and they come in with the quarterback in Connor Cook who has proven to be very good at minimizing turnovers. Remember that Michigan State had the second -ranked defense in the country last season, so Oregon’s spread offense, spearheaded by Heisman Trophy candidate Marcus Mariota, may find yards more difficult than usual. That 12-point impost for Oregon may be a little bloated.
  • Oregon is favored by 12 points.

Michigan Wolverines at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

  • The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have their quarterback once again, and Everett Golson leads this team, which is #15 in the USA Today rankings, into action against the Michigan Wolverines in a 7:30 PM ET start in South Bend. Neither of these teams was tested severely in the first week, but we can tell you that Michigan brought back eight returnees on a defense that forced Notre Dame to the air 53 times in last year’s 41-30 UM victory.
  • The Irish are four-point favorites in the latest college football betting odds at Vietbet.

BYU Cougars at Texas Longhorns

  • For the Texas Longhorns, the motivation is revenge, and in a big way, as they take to the field against the BYU Cougars, And they get them at home in Austin. Last year’s meeting was a nightmare for Texas, as BYU ran for 550 yards, including 308 from quarterback Taysom Hill. It was so embarrassing that it led to the firing of defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, and ultimately to the dismissal of head coach Mack Brown. Charlie Strong has taken over and brought more of a hard-nosed mentality for the Longhorns, but quarterback David Ash will be missing, as he is dealing with concussion issues. Meanwhile, Jamaal Williams, BYU’s leading running back, who was suspended for the opening game against Connecticut, will be back in action.
  • Texas is a one-point favorite in the latest football betting lines at Vietbet.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Ohio State Buckeyes

  • At 8 PM ET, at the “Horseshoe” in Columbus, the Ohio State Buckeyes play host to the Virginia Tech Hokies, as new quarterback JT Barrett continues along in his development. As most college football bettors know, Barrett had to replace Braxton Miller, the Heisman candidate who is sidelined for the rest of the year with an injury, and most people think that would jeopardize OSU’s national title hopes, even though they are ranked seventh in the USA Today poll and 8th by the AP. Virginia Tech isn’t getting a lot of attention right now, but they have an offense that returns nine starters, and installed Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer at quarterback. However, they only brought back one member of the front seven, and whether that is a problem will be something for Barrett to answer. We CAN tell you that Ohio State gave up 370 rushing yards against Navy’s option.
  • Ohio State is an eleven-point favorite at Vietbet, and maybe for some people they fit into the “wait and see” category.
