Return of Jameis Highlights Fab Four College Football Match ups For Week 5
It’s already Week 5 in the 2014 College Football season! Some of the top ranked teams have already seen a perfect record fall by the wayside, but the power standings remain pretty much intact. Here’s a look at four interesting match ups week:
Florida State Seminoles laying 18.5 at North Carolina State Wolfpack
Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston decided to lash out with a number of obscenities in the middle of campus one day last week, and found himself suspended for the first half of last Saturday’s game against Clemson. That was extended to the entire game, after FSU officials realized that they were going to have a PR nightmare otherwise. Winston showed up on game night dressed and warming up. So there’s a screw loose somewhere.
Sports bettors then saw Clemson take the Florida State Seminoles to overtime. That was a crazy week. Now Winston is back, as FSU travels to Raleigh, NC to face the North Carolina State Wolfpack, a team that is off to a 4-0 start, including wins over, well, nobody in particular. FSU is an 18.5-point favorite in the college football betting odds.
Missouri Tigers getting 6 at South Carolina Gamecocks
It must really hurt for the Missouri Tigers right now as they fell as two-touchdown favorites last week to Indiana, and so now is the time for redemption. This is a team that does not lose often, but then they do, they bounce back, as evidenced by a 10-3 record against the football point spread following a straight-up defeat. The South Carolina Gamecocks may not be able to live down the season-opening humiliation at the hands of the red-hot Kenny Hill and the Texas Aggies, but they made a significant move in that direction by beating Georgia, although they followed that up with a non-covering effort against Vanderbilt. In this 7 PM ET start in Columbia (well, ANY game between these two would have to be in Columbia, wouldn’t it?), Steve Spurrier’s team is a six-point favorite in the college football betting odds that have been posted at BetAnySports.
One of the things that Missouri feels it can do is get some pressure on the quarterback, and toward that end, they are looking forward to having Markus Golden, who was missing against the Hoosiers with a hamstring injury (something that could have made a significant difference). Who is the better quarterback in this match up? We would have to say it’s Maty Mauk of the Tigers, who is more mobile than South Carolina’s Dylan Thompson. Last year the Gamecocks had to work for a 27-24 victory in overtime, although it was Mizzou that went on to the SEC title game.
Arkansas Razorbacks getting 9.5 at Texas A&M Aggies
When South Carolina faced Texas A&M in that disastrous opener, they did not have the service of star running back Mike Davis, whose ribs were giving him too many problems. Thus the Aggies’ defensive front was not tested the way it should have been. But the Arkansas Razorbacks are the leading rushing team in the SEC (well, at least that’s what the statistics say) and will likely put some pressure on that defense.
Arkansas was in tough against Auburn in the opener, and after that 45-21 defeat they have come back with three routs, including one over Northern Illinois last week. They are not to be taken lightly, and they have already had to face that Auburn offense, which tries to hurry things up, so the pace won’t be a shocker. Since beating the Gamecocks by 24 points, they gave outscored three opponents by a combined 169-19. What more can Kenny Hill do? Well, he can try to pad his stats a little more; Hill is 70% accurate, with thirteen TD passes and only one interception in 139 attempts. As they host the Hogs in College Station, the Aggies are 9.5 football betting favorites at BetAnySports (3:30 PM ET).
Duke Blue Devils getting 7 at Miami Hurricanes
The Duke Blue Devils may be very much for real, as they are 4-0, learning to blow out opponents to impress pollsters, and indeed impressing some of them, as they are ranked #23 in the nation in the coaches poll. David Cutcliffe has a pretty solid signal-caller in Anthony Boone (7 TD’s, one INT) and have turned loose a freshman running back named Shaun Wilson who has carried it 28 times for 404 yards (yes, that’s right). The Miami Hurricanes, off a 41-31 loss at Nebraska, appear to be a work in progress, as they are still dealing with some freshman mistakes from quarterback Brad Kaaya, who has been picked seven times in 117 attempts and suffered through eight sacks. yet Miami is the seven-point favorite in the college football odds in this game that begins at 7:30 PM ET.
