Chargers vs Rams Odds – CJ’s Take

The Rams have ripped through their first two opponents, outscoring them by a total of 67-13. In the first week, they encountered Jon Gruden making his coaching comeback after 10 years out of the game, and after a slow start, they began to wear their opponents down, eventually registering a 33-13 victory and intercepting quarterback Derek Carr three times. Then last week they simply dominated an Arizona Cardinals team that looks like it is in a deep decline, shutting them out 34-0. In that game, the Rams allowed only 137 total yards, while rolling up 432 of their own. Todd Gurley did not have to have a dominant game (he had two short TD’s), but Brandin Cooks, the speedy receiver who was acquired in the off-season, was all over the field, catching seven passes for 159 yards. Through the first two games, the Rams have out-passed their opponents by an average of three yards per attempt. They have also not allowed a touchdown pass in these fiest two games.

The Chargers let themselves get dominated early by the Kansas City Chiefs and young quarterback Patrick Mahomes in Week 1, losing 38-28, but they did rip apart the Buffalo Bills early last week, getting off to a 28-0 first-half lead and cruising to a 31-20 victory. They were playing against rookie quarterback Josh Allen in that one for the most part, but this week there will be facing someone who is savvy in comparison, as Jared Goff (nine yards per attempt) has been developing rapidly under the tutelage of Sean McVay and his staff.

One of the things that might make matters easier for Goff is that Chargers’ defensive end Joey Bosa has a foot injury and is likely out of action. Part of what can make the Bolts’ stop unit so effective is that they put a lot of pressure on the passer. But very rarely are they going to encounter a dual-threat back like Gurley, who was the offensive player of the year last season. Remember that the Rams, who scored fewer points than any other team in 2016, became the highest-scoring club in the NFL last year, and that was the only time since the merger that has happened.

What the Rams did in the off-season that was so notable was make their defense a lot more dynamic by bringing into “shutdown” corners in Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. If they can take care of their people in man-to-man situations, that frees up the rest of the secondary to make plays. We obviously do not discount the fact that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has a lot of people to distribute the ball to. One of those is running back Melvin Gordon, kind of a poor man’s Todd Gurley, who has caught 15 passes in the first two games, wven though he can’t seem to get past four yards a carry. .

A lot of people are touting the Rams as the team from the NFC that is most likely to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. With the people they have added, that is entirely possible. And naturally, the youthful exuberance and wisdom of McVay is well admired around the league. But you don’t want to count out Rivers, who is 73% accurate with six touchdowns already. He may be able to trade points.
