Buccaneers vs Giants Odds – CJ’s Take

First, let’s talk about the Bucs’ situation first. Everyone knows by now that Ryan Fitzpatrick had three 400-yard games while Jameis Winston was sitting out a suspension to begin the season. After Winston returned, he threw ten interceptions in 148 attempts. So back came Fitzpatrick, who almost led the team to huge comeback win over Cincinnati, then had yet another 400-yard effort against Washington last week. But the team scored just three points. Still, Fitzpatrick gets the call again this week. According to offensive coordinator Todd Monken, “I think it’s more about this week. I think it’s week to week, and I know everybody says that. But at the end of the day, that’s what we’re paid to do, to make those decisions.”

With the Giants’ victory last week, Eli Manning got a reprieve. Head coach Pat Shurmur has actually been considering the possibility of giving rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta a chance to show what he can do. And unless the team goes of on a winning streak, this idea is going to be revisited; if not by Shurmur, then by the New York media.

As most people are aware, Tampa Bay has a very permissive defense, which has given up 292 yards a game through the air and intercepted only one pass. Does this necessarily mean the Giants are going to be able to do a lot of business against them? There are obviously some signature weapons wearing blue – Odell Beckham is averaging almost 100 receiving yards per game, and Saquon Barkley is currently at 1116 all-purpose yards in his rookie season. The problem thus far has been in Manning’s ability to execute. And last week’s win over the Niners was only the third time in nine games that the Giants topped 20 points.

Remember that Manning has been sacked 32 times as well. And that brings us to one guy who is going to have much of his concentration on Eli on Sunday. Jean Pierre-Paul was a mainstay of the Giants’ defense for years, but the team, perhaps fearing he had passed his prime as a pass rusher, traded him to the Bucs during the spring. He now has eight sacks for his new team, and has made it very clear that this game has been marked on his calendar ever since the season started.

As far as the Bucs’ offense is concerned, they haven’t gotten a whole lot out of their ground game (just 3.8 yards a carry), but despite their reliance on the pass, it may surprise people to know that the Giants are actually the NFL team that has thrown the ball most often (68.8%), which is a little surprising because of the presence of Barkley.

Tampa Bay is the team that is functioning best on the offensive side this season, and the defense hasn’t done all that badly against limited attacks. The Giants have gone 0-4 SU and ATS in the Meadowlands this season, so we could cast a mild vote for the Bucs here.
