Browns vs Raiders Odds - 2018 Week 4 NFL Betting Preview

Browns vs Raiders Odds and Sunday Night Football Preview

When the Cleveland Browns took Baker Mayfield with the #1 overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, it was ostensibly with the intention that he would wait a while before being inserted as the starting quarterback, as he sat behind Tyrod Taylor. Well, plans change, and after Taylor took a beating against the New York Jets last time out, Mayfield went into the game and provided the spark that brought the Browns a victory – finally. Now he will start for the first time as he leads the Brownies up against the Oakland Raiders in a game that begins at 4:05 PM ET on Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum.

Browns vs Raiders Odds – CJ’s Take

The Browns were down 14-0 to the Jets when Mayfield entered the fray, and then they stepped things up considerably. The Heisman Trophy winner went 17 of 23 for 201 yards in leading the comeback that brought the team its first win since the 2016 season. In case you’ve noticed, a number of quarterbacks who were drafted high were supposed to “sit and learn” while someone else kept the seat warm. All those plans have gone by the wayside. Browns head coach Hue Jackson tried to be coy about who his starter for this game was going to be, but honestly, who was he fooling?

We don’t know how many people saw this coming, but the Raiders have struggled mightily with the return of Jon Gruden as their head coach. They have failed when it comes to making adjustments, or so it appears, and there may be trouble between him and the front office.

Other teams are able to close out against Oakland, and that’s a problem. They have been outscored by a 37-3 margin in the fourth quarter. It’s very easy to lay a lot of this at the hands of Gruden, who had spent a decade in the broadcast booth before coming back to coaching. But there are some fundamental things this team is just not doing well. For instance, Derek Carr has thrown five interceptions already, and on some of those plays, either his receiver has run a bad route or he has thrown it to a seemingly imaginary receiver when none was there.

The Raiders will have to ask themselves as the season progresses – is Marshawn Lynch someone we can count on? By the same token what about Doug Martin? These are two running backs who have been at the top of the heap but have seen better days, although Gruden’s play-calling has resulted in a respectable amount of balance. They’ve run the ball 82 times, with 111 passes. Considering the way the NFL is these days, that’s not too bad.

We are going to see how well Carr can hold up under pressure, as rookie left tackle Kolton Miller will have the assignment of neutralizing pass rusher Myles Garrett, who was the first pick in the draft two years ago and is starting to come into his own. You cannot underestimate Cleveland’s defense; it has been good enough that this team can make a reasonable argument for being 3-0 right now.

There are rumors that Gruden is already feuding with people in the front office, and that this might be the last season in the general manager’s chair for Reggie McKenzie. Gruden has a very lucrative contract over 10 years, and he would naturally want to be able to, as Bill Parcells once put it, “buy the groceries” that he’ll be cooking. And there has been a conflict over that. If Cleveland can handle the trip to the West Coast, they might be very live as an underdog.
