Belmont Stakes Triple Crown Betting: This Track is a Monster

By Charles Jay

A lot of people who are very familiar with the sport of horse racing believe that when you have to race three times in a period of five weeks, with the longest race last, it makes it especially difficult to put together three performances that are strong enough to win the Triple Crown, particularly when some of the others are well-rested.

Vietbet customers have to keep in mind that the horses who competed in the first Triple Crown race, the Kentucky Derby, did not have any experience going the mile and a quarter. And there are certainly none of them who have been a mile and a half. That is the grueling distance required in the Belmont Stakes, which will begin at approximately 6:50 PM ET at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY.

The dirt track at Belmont can be very intimidating. Nicknamed “Big Sandy,” it is a mile and a half around, which makes it the longest track in North America. So essentially, the horses will be starting thee race at the finish line, which means they go right into the first turn. This makes the start much different than the other Triple Crown races. And that is why is you want early position, you better get out fast.

In the Triple Crown betting odds posted for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, as they are listed at Vietbet, the favorite is, of course, American Pharoah, who is going after the Triple Crown. And he is quite a big favorite at that:

It has been reported that 51% of this race will consist of negotiation around a turn, with less than half of it on a stretch. That is what the configuration of the course has dictated. Which horse it might give an advantage to is unknown, because running this distance is a mystery; sometimes the trainer himself does not know whether his horse can do it unless he has seen it.

Perhaps there are certain advantages to be culled from having run over this track before; only a couple of horses in this field have done it – Frosted (+525 in Triple Crown betting), who had a maiden race (a 6-1/2-furlong defeat) last year, and Madefromlucky (+1500 at Vietbet), a winner of the Peter Pan Stakes a little less than a month ago at a mile and an eighth.

This will take a jockey who is very experienced on this course or can adapt to it quickly, because it just “rides” differently. Will it be important to “save ground”? That might make it harder for Materiality, starting out of the #8 spot. Will American Pharoah (the -130 favorite) get out front quickly? He’s been known to do it. Going right into that turn will be something new for these horses, to be certain.

They call it the “Test of the Champion.” Well, it is undoubtedly going to be a test of SOMETHING.
