Arizona Cardinals vs Miami Dolphins – CJ’s Take:
With their backs to the wall, Arizona came up with a 31-23 victory over the Washington Redskins last week. David Johnson, who has developed into perhaps the best all-purpose back in the league, and 84 yards rushing and 91 yards in receptions, and he has been reaffirming his reputation as perhaps the hardest running back in the league to take down. But now comes a road test for this team, which has not done very well when traveling east. As they have gone to that time zone, the Cardinals have suffered defeats by 15, 10 and 19 points, and they will face a Miami team that has to be angry after their 38-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, in which quarterback Ryan Tannehill was intercepted three times.
These are two teams ranked among the worst in the NFL in getting out of the gate quickly, if scoring points is a good barometer. Miami has tallied an average of only 2.2 points in the first quarter, while Arizona is at 2.9. So maybe one key this game is can get off to a better start. Carson Palmer has been serviceable, but he has not given the Cardinals the kind of performance he did last season, when he was a popular MVP candidate. He did have 300 yards passing last week, but his 11 interceptions have hurt this club.
Miami is going to have to try to establish the running game that helped it make the big move up the playoff ladder. Behind running back Jay Ajayi, they won six games in a row, and he put together back-to-back 200-yard games, only the third time in NFL history that has been done. But last week he only had 61 yards against the Ravens, who are the league’s best when it comes to defending opposing ground attacks.
