The Indianapolis Colts welcomed back their quarterback last week, and he showed some flashes of brilliance as his team now has some old of contending in the AFC South. But they have to be better on the other side of the ball if they want to get past the Washington Redskins, who looked superb on offense in their season opener. One thing the Colts may not have expected to do was throw the ball so much. Luck went 39 of 53 for 319 yards, but the team only ran the ball 22 times. Indianapolis did not do a lot of upgrading to the ground game in the off-season, and they are not likely to get a whole lot out of it this season. At one point in last week’s season opener against Cincinnati, they were up 23-10, but they faltered, going down to a 34-23 defeat, with a Cincinnati fumble return for a touchdown capping off the festivities.
The Redskins had an easy time of it out in the desert against the Arizona Cardinals, scoring 21 points in the first quarter, then coasting to a 24-6 win. Alex Smith, who came over in a trade with Kansas City to replace the departed Kirk Cousins, completed 21 out of 30 passes with two touchdowns.
Much of the Redskins’ success has to be attributed to the Arizona offense, which just didn’t appear to be ready to play football. And the Cardinal defense seemed ill-equipped as well, as Washington roared to 30 first downs and 429 total yards. A pleasant surprise was supplied by Adrian Peterson, wh the team picked up late in training camp, as he had 96 yards on the day. If he could steady their ground game, that would be a big plus. Chris Thompson was also huge out of the backfield, with 128 yards from scrimmage. So it’s quite possible that Jay Gruden’s offense could really start to hum.
Luck had 111 passing yards to the tight ends – Jack Doyle and Eric Ebron – and new coach Frank Reich hopes that the Colts can be successful going up-tempo. Again, the real concern will be on the defensive side, where Indianapolis ranked just 30th in the NFL last season. They will be more severely tested by Smith than they were by Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton.
Should we be sold on Washington’s defense? We figured that Arizona might be improved bunch, but they managed only 213 total yards against the Redskins’ stop unit. The weak spot is that Washington allowed more yards on the ground than any other team in the NFL last season. That doesn’t appear to be something that would hurt them in this instance.
