Well, what is interesting to note is that while Atlanta scored 540 points during the 2016 regular season, those totals were way, way down last year, as they totaled only 353. What accounted for that? Well, probably a variety of factors, one of which is that that huge point total in 2016 may have been an aberration. Also, something has to be said for the transition that took place as offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan left the team to take the head job in San Francisco, with Steve Sarkisian coming in to replace him. However, Sarkisian did not make wholesale changes to the scheme. The Falcons could have used some more production out of Devonta Freeman, but with knee problems and a couple of concussions, he was limited to 865 yards rushing. And Matt Ryan, who threw for 38 touchdowns during the Super Bowl season, had that reduced to 20 last year.
The team loses Taylor Gabriel and Andre Roberts from its group of receivers, but in their quest to find a worthy complement to Julio Jones, who had 1444 yards but only three touchdowns last year, they drafted another Alabama alumnus, Calvin Ridley, in the first round. Ridley is widely considered to be the best route-runner available in the draft, so let’s see how much pressure he can take off Jones, who had been looking to renegotiate his contract at the beginning of training camp and eventually reported.
A number of defenders left town, including Adrian Clayborn and Dontari Poe, and the Falcons tried to add some defensive line depth by signing Garrison Smith, who spent last season with Seattle Seahawks. The secondary was addressed with second-round draft pick Isaiah Oliver, a cornerback out of Colorado, and it should be noted that Justin Bethel was also added to the secondary, although the former Arizona Cardinal is of much more value on special teams, where he is a perennial Pro Bowler.
It might surprise some people that the Falcons actually play some defense, but remember, this was Dan Quinn’s forte when he was an assistant with the Seattle Seahawks. This was a top ten unit in 2017, so it would stand to reason that if they can hike those offensive numbers a little, there is no reason they can’t be right in the mix with New Orleans and Carolina in the NFC South.
