2017 Final Four Betting Tips – CJ’s Take on Gonzaga:

Gonzaga is 36-1 straight-up, and they have absolutely killed it against the basketball pointspread, going 23-9-2 ATS. There only losses took place at home against BYU, the team that had beaten them the previous two seasons in Spokane. But the Bulldogs shook that off and swept through the West Coast Conference tournament, finishing things with a victory over St. Mary’s, a team they have beaten three times this season by double digits. Make no mistake about it; Gonzaga is to be taken very seriously, and they have the non-conference victories to prove it, over the likes of Arizona, Iowa State, and Florida, which was recently eliminated in the Elite Eight by Saturday’s opponent, the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Gonzaga was utterly impressive in and 83-59 victory over Xavier, holding the Musketeers to just 2-16 from beyond the arc. Great defense is no surprise for anyone who has watched insider this season; they are #1 in the nation in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency, according to the respective analytics site KenPom.com, and they have defended to-point shooting better than anyone in the nation, allowing only 39.8%.

Gonzaga is a team that has transfers playing very prominent roles. Jordan Matthews, the 6-3 guard who had previously played at California, is averaging 13.5 points in the NCAA Tournament. Jonathan Williams, an athletic 6-9 forward who is a Missouri transfer, scored 19 points against Xavier and had 14 rebounds in the tournament opener against South Dakota State. And the leader of this team is Nigel Williams-Goss, a Washington transfer who averaged 16.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists on his way to being named the West Coast Conference player of the year. But he’s been slumping, shooting only 31% in NCAA Tournament play thus far.

One of the unique things about Gonzaga is the fact that they can always have a seven-footer on the floor. Przemek Karnowski averages 9.3 points per game, and he plays about half the time, getting a breather when fellow seven-footer Zach Collins comes into the game. Obviously these guys can protect the rim very well. Only one opponent in the last 22 has shot 42% or better against the Bulldogs. And on an overall basis, the ‘Zags have made 50.9% of its shots from the field. This is a tough bunch.
